“You have won my daughter now (теперь ты завоевал мою дочь; to win /won/ – выиграть; добиться, завоевать),” said the king of Erin (сказал король Ирландии) when he saw the heads (когда он увидел головы); “but you’ll not get her unless you tell me (но ты ее не получишь, пока не расскажешь мне) what stops the Gruagach Gaire from laughing (что же мешает Смеющемуся Груагаху смеяться; to stop – останавливать, задерживать; удерживать, останавливать, мешать, не давать).”

 “You have won my daughter now,” said the king of Erin when he saw the heads; “but you’ll not get her unless you tell me what stops the Gruagach Gaire from laughing.”

On the fourth morning the cowboy rose before his master (на четвертое утро пастух встал раньше своего хозяина: «до своего хозяина»; to rise /rose, risen/), and the first words he said to the Gruagach were (и первые слова, которые он сказал Груагаху, были /такими/):

“What keeps you from laughing (что мешает тебе смеяться: «удерживает тебя от смеха»), you who used to laugh so loud (тебе, который обычно смеялся так громко) that the whole world heard you (что весь: «целый» мир слышал тебя; to hear /heard/)?”

“I’m sorry (мне жаль),” said the Gruagach, “that the daughter of the king of Erin sent you here (что дочь короля Ирландии прислала тебя сюда; to send /sent/).”

 On the fourth morning the cowboy rose before his master, and the first words he said to the Gruagach were:

“What keeps you from laughing, you who used to laugh so loud that the whole world heard you?”

“I’m sorry,” said the Gruagach, “that the daughter of the king of Erin sent you here.”

“If you don’t tell me of your own will (если ты не скажешь мне по своей собственной = доброй воле), I’ll make you tell me (я заставлю тебя сказать мне; to make – делать; заставлять),” said the cowboy (сказал пастух) and he put a face on himself (и он сделал такое лицо: «надел на себя такое выражение лица»; face – лицо; выражение лица) that was terrible to look at (что было страшно на него смотреть), and running through the house like a madman (и, обежав дом, как безумец; through – через, сквозь; по; mad – бешеный), could find nothing that would give pain enough to the Gruagach (/он/ не смог найти ничего, что причинило бы Груагаху достаточно боли; to give – давать; причинять /неприятность, беспокойство и т. п./) but some ropes (кроме каких-то веревок) made of untanned sheepskin (сделанных из недубленой овечьей кожи: «овчины»; to tan – дубить /кожу/; tanned – дубленный; untanned – недубленый) hanging on the wall (висевших на стене).

 “If you don’t tell me of your own will, I’ll make you tell me,” said the cowboy and he put a face on himself that was terrible to look at, and running through the house like a madman, could find nothing that would give pain enough to the Gruagach but some ropes made of untanned sheepskin hanging on the wall.
