“Well (что ж),” said the Gruagach, “you won’t see your son today (ты не увидишь своего сына сегодня). At noon tomorrow I’ll put a whistle in my mouth (завтра в полдень я возьму: «вложу себе в рот» свисток) and call together all the birds in my place (и созову вместе всех птиц в своем доме: «в моем месте»), and they’ll come (и они прилетят). Among others will be twelve doves (среди других /птиц/ будет дюжина голубей).

 “Well,” said the Gruagach, “you won’t see your son today. At noon tomorrow I’ll put a whistle in my mouth and call together all the birds in my place, and they’ll come. Among others will be twelve doves.

I’ll put my hand in my pocket (я суну руку себе в карман: «я положу свою руку в свой карман»), this way (вот так: «таким образом»), and take out wheat (и вытащу пшеницу = зерна пшеницы) and throw it before them on the ground (и брошу их перед ними на землю). The doves will eat the wheat (голуби съедят пшеницу), and you must pick your son out of the twelve (и ты должен будешь выбрать своего сына из тех двенадцати). If you find him (если ты его найдешь), you’ll have him (ты его получишь); if you don’t (а если нет), you’ll never get him again (ты никогда его больше: «снова» не получишь).”

After the Gruagach had said these words (после того, как Груагах произнес эти слова) the old man ate his supper and went to bed (старик съел свой ужин и пошел спать: «в постель»; to eat /ate, eaten/; to go /went, gone/). In the dead of night (глубокой ночью; dead – мертвый; глухая пора; in the dead of night – глубокой ночью, в глухую полночь) the old fisherman’s son came (пришел сын старого рыбака).

 I’ll put my hand in my pocket, this way, and take out wheat and throw it before them on the ground. The doves will eat the wheat, and you must pick your son out of the twelve. If you find him, you’ll have him; if you don’t, you’ll never get him again.”

After the Gruagach had said these words the old man ate his supper and went to bed. In the dead of night the old fisherman’s son came.

“Oh, father (ах, отец)!” said he, “it would be hard for you (тебе было бы сложно; hard – усердно, упорно; тяжело, с трудом) to pick me out among the twelve doves (выбрать меня среди двенадцати /других/ голубей), if you had to do it alone (если бы тебе пришлось делать это одному); but I’ll tell you (но я тебе расскажу). When the Gruagach calls us in (когда Груагах позовет нас /к себе/), and we go to pick up the wheat (и мы пойдем подбирать = начнем клевать пшеницу), I’ll make a ring around the others (я пройдусь вокруг других: «я сделаю круг вокруг других»), walking for myself (вышагивая в одиночестве: «сам по себе»); and as I go I’ll give some of them a tip of my bill (и пока я буду идти, я слегка клюну некоторых из них: «я дам некоторым из них кончиком моего клюва»), and I’ll lift my wings (и я буду поднимать крылья) when I’m striking them (когда я буду ударять их; to strike).
