“I’ll take the whistle from her, anyhow (я заберу у нее свисток в любом случае; anyhow – во что бы то не стало, в любом случае; как-нибудь, любым путем, так или иначе),” said the queen. So she sent for the whistle (итак, она послала за свистком; to send /sent/).

The princess gave answer (принцесса ответила; to give /gave, given/ – давать; answer – ответ) that she would give up the whistle (что она отдаст свисток) if she might pass one night with the queen’s husband (если она могла бы провести одну ночь с мужем королевы).

The queen agreed (королева согласилась), and gave him a draught as on the other nights (и дала ему глоток /сонного зелья/, как и в предыдущие: «другие» ночи). He was asleep (он спал: «был спящим») when the princess came and when she went away (когда принцесса пришла, и когда она ушла прочь).

Before going (перед уходом), the princess left a letter (принцесса оставила письмо; to leave /left/ – оставлять; letter – буква; письмо, послание) with his servant (с его слугой) for the queen’s husband (для мужа королевы), in which she told (в котором она рассказала) how she had followed him to Tir na n-Og (как она последовала за ним в Страну Юности), and had given the scissors, the comb, and the whistle (и отдала ножницы, гребень и свисток; to give /gave, given/), to pass three nights in his company (чтобы провести три ночи с ним: «в его обществе»; to pass – идти, проходить; проводить /время, день и т. п./), but had not spoken to him (но не поговорила с ним; to speak /spoke, spoken/) because the queen had given him sleeping draughts (потому что королева давала ему снотворное; sleeping – спящий; sleeping draught – снотворное, сонное зелье); that the life of the queen was in an egg (и что жизнь королевы была в яйце), the egg in a duck (яйцо в утке), the duck in a wether (утка в валухе), the wether in a holly-tree in front of the castle (валух в падубе перед замком), and that no man could split the tree but himself (и что никто: «никакой человек» не смог бы расколоть то дерево, кроме него самого).

 Before going, the princess left a letter with his servant for the queen’s husband, in which she told how she had followed him to Tir na n-Og, and had given the scissors, the comb, and the whistle, to pass three nights in his company, but had not spoken to him because the queen had given him sleeping draughts; that the life of the queen was in an egg, the egg in a duck, the duck in a wether, the wether in a holly-tree in front of the castle, and that no man could split the tree but himself.
