As soon as he got the letter (как только он получил письмо; to get /got/) the husband took an axe (муж взял топор; to take /took, taken/), and went to the holly-tree (и пошел к падубу). When he came to the tree (когда он подошел к дереву) he found the princess there before him (он застал там принцессу: «обнаружил там принцессу перед собой»; to find /found/ – находить, отыскивать; застать, найти /где-л., за каким-л. занятием/), having the two boxes with the fox and the hawk in them (/у которой с собой/ были две коробки, с лисицей и ястребом в них).

He ran scarce twenty perches (едва он пробежал метров сто: «двадцать перчей»; to run /ran, run/; perch – насест, жердочка; перч, мера длины ок. 5 метров) before the fox caught him (прежде чем = как лисица схватила его; to catch /caught/). The fox tore him open (лисица разорвала его /на куски/; to tear /tore, torn/ – разрывать, рвать; open – открытый, раскрытый; to tear open – вскрыть); then the duck flew out (тогда /из него/ вылетела утка; to fly /flew, flown/ – лететь). The duck had not flown fifteen perches (утка не пролетела и семидесяти пяти метров: «пятнадцати перчей») when the hawk caught and killed her (как ястреб схватил и убил ее), smashing the egg (разбив яйцо). That instant the Queen of Tir na n-Og died (в то же мгновение королева Страны Юности умерла).
