“I have just sailed from Lonesome Island (я только что приплыл с Одинокого Острова; sail – парус; to sail – плавать, плыть, идти /под парусом/),” said the captain. “I was obliged to sail away (я был вынужден уплыть; to oblige – обязывать; вынуждать, вынудить), for fire was coming from every side to burn my ship (потому что огонь подступал со всех сторон, угрожая моему кораблю: «с каждой стороны, чтобы сжечь мой корабль»).”

 They brought him food and drink; and when he had eaten and drunk, the prince said to the captain, “What part of the world have you come from?”

“I have just sailed from Lonesome Island,” said the captain. “I was obliged to sail away, for fire was coming from every side to burn my ship.”

“Would you like to go back (вы бы хотели вернуться)?”

“I should indeed (да, конечно).”

“Well, turn around (что ж, тогда поворачивайте); you’ll have no trouble (у вас не будет никаких проблем; trouble – волнение, тревога; неприятность, беда, напасть) if I am with you (если я буду с вами).”

 “Would you like to go back?”

“I should indeed.”

“Well, turn around; you’ll have no trouble if I am with you.”

The captain returned (капитан вернулся /на Одинокий Остров/). The queen of Lonesome Island was standing on the shore (королева Одинокого Острова стояла на берегу) as the ship came in (когда корабль подошел к /острову/).

“Oh, my child (о, мое дитя)!” cried she (воскликнула она; to cry – кричать, орать; восклицать, вскрикнуть), “why have you been away so long (почему тебя не было так долго; away – отсутствующий, в отсутствии; to be away – отсутствовать, уехать)?”

 The captain returned. The queen of Lonesome Island was standing on the shore as the ship came in.

“Oh, my child!” cried she, “why have you been away so long?”

“The queen of Erin threw me into the sea (королева Ирландии сбросила меня в море; to throw /threw, thrown/) after I had kept the head of the king of Erin on him (после того как я спас голову короля Ирландии: «сохранил голову короля Ирландии на нем»; to keep /kept/), and saved her life too (и спас и ее жизнь тоже).”

“Well, my son, that will come up against the queen of Erin on another day (что ж, сын мой, когда-нибудь это выйдет королеве Ирландии боком: «это выйдет против королевы Ирландии в какой-нибудь другой день»).”

 “The queen of Erin threw me into the sea after I had kept the head of the king of Erin on him, and saved her life too.”

“Well, my son, that will come up against the queen of Erin on another day.”

Now, the prince lived on Lonesome Island three years longer (и вот принц прожил на Одиноком Острове еще три года: «/на/ три года дольше»; long – длинный; долгий, продолжительный), till one time he came home from hunting (пока однажды он /не/ вернулся домой с охоты), and found his mother wringing her hands (и /не/ обнаружил свою мать заламывающей себе руки; to wring – скручивать) and shedding bitter tears (и роняющей горькие слезы; to shed – проливать, лить /слезы, кровь/).

“Oh! what has happened (что случилось)?” asked he.
