Usually Freshmen can't get singles; they are very scarce, but I got one without even asking. I suppose the registrar didn't think it would be right to ask a properly brought-up girl to room with a foundling. You see there are advantages!

They are organizing the Freshman basket-ball team (организуется = создается баскетбольная команда первокурсниц) and there's just a chance that I shall get in it (и не исключено, что я могу в нее попасть; chance — случайность; шанс, вероятность, возможность). I'm little of course (я невысокого роста, конечно; little — маленький; невысокий), but terribly quick and wiry and tough (но жутко проворная, стойкая и крепкая; wiry — тонкий, гибкий и крепкий /как проволока/; wire — проволока; жилистый, выносливый; tough — жесткий; крепкий, стойкий). While the others are hopping about in the air (пока другие прыгают в воздухе), I can dodge under their feet and grab the ball (я смогу сновать у них под ногами и перехватывать мяч; to dodge — увертываться, уклоняться от удара; сновать взад и вперед).

These are the happiest girls I ever saw (это самые счастливые девушки, которых я когда-либо видела) — and I am the happiest of all (и я — самая счастливая из них всех)!

I meant to write a long letter (я собиралась написать длинное = подробное письмо) and tell you all the things I'm learning (и рассказать вам обо всем, что я изучаю) (Mrs. Lippett said you wanted to know (миссис Липпетт сказала, что вы хотите это знать)), but 7th hour has just rung (но только что прозвенел семичасовой звонок), and in ten minutes I'm due at the athletic field in gymnasium clothes (и через десять минут мне надлежит быть на спортивной площадке в спортивной форме; gymnasium — гимнастический зал; clothes — одежда, платье). Don't you hope I'll get in the team (ну разве вы не надеетесь, что я попаду в команду)?
