I smiled a little and said no (я слегка улыбнулась и сказала что нет); I thought I could pull through (я думаю, что могу как-то пережить это; to pull through — разг. выжить; преодолеть /трудности/: «протащить, протолкнуть сквозь»). At least homesickness is one disease that I've escaped (во всяком случае, тоска по дому — вот болезнь, которой мне удалось избежать)! I never heard of anybody being asylum-sick, did you (никогда не слышала, чтобы кто-то тосковал по приюту, а вы)?

Did you ever hear of Michael Angelo (вы когда-нибудь слышали о Микеланджело)?

He was a famous artist (он был знаменитым живописцем; fame — слава) who lived in Italy in the Middle Ages (который жил в Италии в средние века). Everybody in English Literature seemed to know about him (все на занятиях английской литературы, кажется, знают о нем), and the whole class laughed (и вся группа смеялась; class — класс, разряд; класс /в школе/, группа /в колледже/) because I thought he was an archangel (оттого что я подумала, что это был архангел). He sounds like an archangel, doesn't he (/его имя звучит/ похоже на архангела, ведь так; to sound — звучать, издавать звук; звучать, создавать впечатление)? The trouble with college is (главная проблема с этим колледжем заключается в том; trouble — беспокойство; затруднение, трудность) that you are expected to know such a lot of things (что от тебя требуется знание такого количества вещей; to expect — ожидать; требовать) you've never learned (которых ты никогда и не учил). It's very embarrassing at times (это очень смущает: «является смущающим/озадачивающим» иногда; to embarrass — затруднять, мешать; сбивать с толку, приводить в замешательство, удивлять; смущать, ставить в неудобное положение).

But now, when the girls talk about things that I never heard of (но теперь, когда девушки говорят о вещах, о которых я никогда не слышала), I just keep still and look them up in the encyclopedia (я помалкиваю и отыскиваю их в энциклопедии; to keep still — вести себя тихо; молчать; не шевелиться; to look up — искать /в словаре, справочнике/).

I made an awful mistake the first day (я совершила ужасную ошибку в первый же день). Somebody mentioned Maurice Maeterlinck (кто-то упомянул Мориса Метерлинка), and I asked if she was a Freshman (а я спросила, она, что, первокурсница). That joke has gone all over college (это шутка облетела: «обошла» весь колледж). But anyway, I'm just as bright in class as any of the others (но, в любом случае, я такая же смышленая в нашей группе, как и все остальные; bright — яркий, блестящий; способный, сообразительный) — and brighter than some of them (и даже смышленее, чем некоторые из них)!
