Don't be nervous, Daddy — I haven't lost my mind; I'm merely quoting Sam'l Pepys. We're reading him in connection with English History, original sources. Sallie and Julia and I converse now in the language of 1660. Listen to this:

'I went to Charing Cross to see Major Harrison hanged, drawn and quartered: he looking as cheerful as any man could do in that condition.' And this: 'Dined with my lady who is in handsome mourning for her brother who died yesterday of spotted fever.' Seems a little early to commence entertaining, doesn't it?

A friend of Pepys devised a very cunning manner (один друг Пипса придумал очень хитрый способ) whereby the king might pay his debts (при помощи которого король мог бы платить свои долги) out of the sale to poor people of old decayed provisions (за счет продажи бедным людям старых испортившихся съестных припасов; to decay — приходить в упадок, разлагаться; гнить; provision — снабжение, обеспечение; провизия, пищевые припасы). What do you, a reformer, think of that (что вы, реформатор, думаете об этом)? Samuel was as excited about his clothes as any girl (Сэмюэль так же волновался о своих нарядах, как любая девушка); he spent five times as much on dress as his wife (он тратил в пять раз больше на одежду, чем его жена; time — время; раз; dress — платье, одежда) — that appears to have been the Golden Age of husbands (кажется, что это был Золотой Век мужей; age — возраст; век, эпоха). Now that we may stay up as long as we choose (теперь, когда мы можем не ложиться спать так долго, как мы захотим; to stay up — не ложиться спать), we no longer choose (мы больше не хотим). Our heads begin to nod at nine o'clock (наши головы начинают кивать = мы начинаем клевать носом в девять часов), and by nine-thirty the pen drops from our nerveless grasp (и к половине десятого ручка выпадает из слабой руки; grasp — крепкое сжатие, схватка).
