Do you want to know something? I have three pairs of kid gloves. I've had kid mittens before from the Christmas tree, but never real kid gloves with five fingers. I take them out and try them on every little while. It's all I can do not to wear them to classes.

It doesn't seem possible, does it (что кажется невозможным, не так ли), considering the eighteen years of training that I've had (принимая во внимание те восемнадцать лет воспитания, которое я получила)? The aim of the John Grier Home (/основная/ цель приюта Джона Грира) (as you doubtless know and heartily approve of (как вы, без сомнения, знаете, и искренне одобряете)) is to turn the ninety-seven orphans into ninety-seven twins (превратить девяносто семь сироток в девяносто семь точных копий /друг друга/: «близнецов»; to turn (in)to smb., smth. — превращаться в кого-либо, что-либо, становиться кем-либо, чем-либо; twin — близнец; двойник, точная копия).

The unusual artistic ability which I exhibit (те необычные художественные способности, которые я проявляю; ability — способность /сделать что-либо/; способность, талант, дарование) was developed at an early age (были развиты /во мне/ в раннем возрасте) through drawing chalk pictures of Mrs. Lippett on the woodshed door (путем рисования мелом портретов миссис Липпетт на двери дровяного сарая; picture — картина, рисунок; портрет).

I hope that I don't hurt your feelings (надеюсь, что я не задеваю ваши чувства; to hurt — причинять боль; больно задевать, обижать) when I criticize the home of my youth (когда критикую дом, /в котором провела/ свою юность)? But you have the upper hand, you know (но все в ваших руках, вы же знаете; upper — верхний; to have the upper hand — одержать верх, выиграть), for if I become too impertinent (потому как, если я стану слишком дерзкой), you can always stop payment of your cheques (вы всегда можете остановить оплату по чекам).
