Sometimes he lost the scent (иногда она теряла след; scent — запах; след; to follow the scent — идти по следу). When the old man saw him coming (когда старик увидел, что она приближается) he knew that this was a shark that had no fear at all (он знал, что это была та акула, в которой совсем нет страха) and would do exactly what he wished (и которая сделает в точности то, что желает).
