Toward evening they came to a great forest (к вечеру они подошли к большому лесу), where the trees grew so big and close together (в котором большие деревья росли столь близко) that their branches met over the road of yellow brick (что их ветви встречались = сплетались над дорогой из желтого кирпича; to meet). It was almost dark under the trees (под деревьями было почти темно), for the branches shut out the daylight (потому что ветви загораживали дневной свет; to shut out — не допускать, не впускать /кого-либо/; загораживать, закрывать; to shut — закрывать, запирать); but the travelers did not stop (но путешественники не останавливались), and went on into the forest (и продолжали идти вглубь леса).

"I hope so," said Dorothy earnestly, "since you seem anxious to have them."

"Oh, yes; I am anxious," returned the Scarecrow. "It is such an uncomfortable feeling to know one is a fool."

"If you see any house, or any place where we can pass the night (если ты увидишь какой-нибудь дом или место, где мы могли бы провести ночь = переночевать)," she said, "you must tell me (ты должен мне сказать); for it is very uncomfortable walking in the dark (потому что идти в темноте очень неудобно)."

Soon after the Scarecrow stopped (вскоре после этого Страшила остановился).
