"No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home." The Scarecrow sighed.

"Of course I cannot understand it," he said. "If your heads were stuffed with straw, like mine, you would probably all live in the beautiful places, and then Kansas would have no people at all. It is fortunate for Kansas that you have brains."

"Won't you tell me a story, while we are resting?" asked the child.

The Scarecrow looked at her reproachfully, and answered: "My life has been so short that I really know nothing whatever."

"I was only made day before yesterday (я был сделан только позавчера). What happened in the world before that time is all unknown to me (что произошло в мире до того времени — мне это все = совершенно не известно). Luckily, when the farmer made my head (к счастью, когда фермер делал мою голову; luck — фортуна, судьба; везение, удача; luckily — к счастью, по счастливой случайности), one of the first things he did was to paint my ears (одну из первых вещей, что он сделал, так это нарисовал мои уши), so that I heard what was going on (поэтому я слышал, что происходило). There was another Munchkin with him (с ним был еще один Манчкин), and the first thing I heard was the farmer saying (и первое, что я услышал, были слова фермера: «я услышал, как фермер говорит»), `How do you like those ears (как тебе нравятся эти уши)?' 'They aren't straight (они кривые: «не прямые»; straight — неизогнутый, прямой),'" answered the other (ответил другой /Манчкин/).

"`Never mind (не беда; never mind — ничего, неважно, не беспокойтесь),'" said the farmer. "`They are ears just the same (это все равно уши; just the same — таким же образом; тем не менее, все-таки: «точно такое же»),'" which was true enough (что, в общем-то, было правдой: «правдой достаточно»).

world [wq:ld], unknown [An'nqun], heard [hq:d], farmer ['fQ:mq]

"I was only made day before yesterday. What happened in the world before that time is all unknown to me. Luckily, when the farmer made my head, one of the first things he did was to paint my ears, so that I heard what was going on. There was another Munchkin with him, and the first thing I heard was the farmer saying, 'How do you like those ears?' 'They aren't straight,'" answered the other.

"`Never mind,'" said the farmer. "`They are ears just the same,'" which was true enough.

"`Now I'll make the eyes (теперь я сделаю глаза),'" said the farmer. So he painted my right eye (и он нарисовал мой правый глаз), and as soon as it was finished (и как только он был закончен = нарисован) I found myself looking at him and at everything around me with a great deal of curiosity (я обнаружил, что смотрю на него и на все вокруг себя с большой /долей/ любопытства; deal — некоторое количество; a great deal of — много), for this was my first glimpse of the world (ведь это был мой первый /беглый/ взгляд на мир; glimpse — проблеск, слабый свет; беглый взгляд, беглое знакомство).

"That's a rather pretty eye (вот, довольно хороший глаз; pretty — миловидный, прелестный; приятный; хороший /о вещах/)," remarked the Munchkin who was watching the farmer (заметил Манчкин, наблюдавший за фермером). "'Blue paint is just the color for eyes (голубая краска — самый подходящий цвет для глаз: «как раз цвет для глаз»).'

"`I think I'll make the other a little bigger (я думаю, что сделаю другой /глаз/ немного побольше),'" said the farmer. And when the second eye was done I could see much better than before (и, когда второй глаз был выполнен, я смог видеть намного лучше, чем раньше). Then he made my nose and my mouth (затем он сделал = нарисовал мой нос и мой рот). But I did not speak, because at that time I didn't know what a mouth was for (но я не говорил, потому что в то время я не знал, для чего рот /предназначен/).

great [greIt], deal [di:l], glimpse [glImps], rather ['rQ:Dq]

"`Now I'll make the eyes,'" said the farmer. So he painted my right eye, and as soon as it was finished I found myself looking at him and at everything around me with a great deal of curiosity, for this was my first glimpse of the world.

"That's a rather pretty eye," remarked the Munchkin who was watching the farmer. "`Blue paint is just the color for eyes.' "`I think I'll make the other a little bigger,'" said the farmer. And when the second eye was done I could see much better than before. Then he made my nose and my mouth. But I did not speak, because at that time I didn't know what a mouth was for.
