Unable to decide if this were fantasy or reality, Corum gave up his efforts to remain on the other plane, and merged back into the one he left. But still the dark-faced creature carried him, the brown beast at its side, deep into the forest, moving at great speed until they were far away from the Mabden camp. Corum fainted once again.

He awoke in daylight and he saw the board lying some distance away. He lay on the green grass of a valley and there was a spring nearby and, close to that, a little pile of nuts and fruit. Not far from the pile of food sat the brown beast. It was watching him.

Corum looked at his left arm (Корум посмотрел на свою левую руку). Something had been smeared on the stump (что-то было намазано на культю; to smear — намазывать, смазывать; пачкать) and there was no pain there any more (и не было больше боли). He put his right hand to his right eye and touched sticky stuff (он коснулся правой рукой правого глаза и почувствовал /какую-то/ клейкую массу; to touch — /при/касаться; осязать, ощущать; stuff — материя; материал, вещество) that must have been the same salve (которая, должно быть, была той же самой мазью; salve — целебная мазь; средство для успокоения) as that which was on his stump (что и та, которая была на его культе).

Birds sang in the nearby woods (птицы пели в близлежащем лесу; to sing). The sky was clear and blue (небо было ясным и голубым; blue — голубой, лазурный, синий). If it were not for his injuries (если бы не его увечья; injury — вред, /телесное/ повреждение; рана), Corum might have thought the events of the last few weeks a black dream (Корум мог бы подумать, /что/ события последних нескольких недель /являлись/ страшным: «черным» сном).

Now the brown, furry creature got up and shambled towards him (и тут бурое мохнатое существо встало и вразвалку пошло к нему; to shamble — волочить ноги, тащиться, ходить неуклюже). It cleared its throat (оно откашлялось: «прочистило свое горло»). Its expression was still one of sympathy (выражение /его глаз/ было по-прежнему выражением сострадания = глаза выражали сочувствие). It touched its own right eye, its own left wrist (оно коснулось своего правого глаза, /затем/ своего левого предплечья).

`Gone (/боль/ прошла), Corum said. `I thank you, brown man, for your help in rescuing me (благодарю тебя, мохнатый человек, за твою помощь в спасении меня = за то, что спас меня; to rescue — спасать, выручать; избавлять).

The brown man frowned at him (мохнатый человек нахмурился), evidently not understanding all the words (очевидно, не понимая всех слов). Then it smiled and nodded its head and said (потом улыбнулся, кивнул головой и сказал):

`Good (хорошо).

`Who are you (кто ты)? Corum said. `Who was it you brought last night (кого ты приводил /с собой/ прошлой ночью; to bring)?

The creature tapped its chest (существо хлопнуло себя по груди).

`How — pain? it said in a slurred tone, obviously voicing the words with difficulty.

`Gone, Corum said. `I thank you, brown man, for your help in rescuing me.

The brown man frowned at him, evidently not understanding all the words. Then it smiled and nodded its head and said:

`Good.

`Who are you? Corum said. `Who was it you brought last night?

The creature tapped its chest.

`Me Serwde (я — Сервд; me — меня, мне /косвенный падеж от I/, разговорная форма I). Me friend of you (я — твой друг).
