By this time the Stranger-man (к этому времени Незнакомец) (in spite of being a Tewara (несмотря на то, что он был Теварец)) was really annoyed (был действительно раздосадован). They had filled his hair quite solid with mud (они забили ему волосы грязью, отчего они совершенно затвердели: «они заполнили его волосы совершенно твердо грязью»); they had rolled him up and down on knobby pebbles (они катали его туда-сюда по шишковатой гальке); they had sat upon him in a long line of six (они сидели на нем длинным рядом из шести человек); they had thumped him and bumped him (они били /его/ и колотили его) till he could hardly breathe (пока он мог едва дышать = пока он едва не дышал); and though he did not understand their language (и хотя он не понимал их языка), he was almost sure (он был почти уверен) that the names the Neolithic ladies called him were not ladylike (что имена = слова, которыми Неолитические дамы называли его, были не характерны для воспитанных дам / не пристали воспитанным дамам). However, he said nothing (однако он ничего не сказал) till all the Tribe of Tegumai were assembled (пока не собралось все Племя Тегумая), and then he led them back to the bank of the Wagai river (а затем он повел их обратно к берегу реки Вагай), and there they found Taffy making daisy-chains (и там они нашли Тэффи, плетущую гирлянды из ромашек), and Tegumai carefully spearing small carp with his mended spear (и Тегумая, осторожно бьющего маленьких карпов своей починенной острогой).

knobby ['nObI], breathe [brJD], daisy ['deIzI]

By this time the Stranger-man (in spite of being a Tewara) was really annoyed. They had filled his hair quite solid with mud; they had rolled him up and down on knobby pebbles; they had sat upon him in a long line of six; they had thumped him and bumped him till he could hardly breathe; and though he did not understand their language, he was almost sure that the names the Neolithic ladies called him were not ladylike. However, he said nothing till all the Tribe of Tegumai were assembled, and then he led them back to the bank of the Wagai river, and there they found Taffy making daisy-chains, and Tegumai carefully spearing small carp with his mended spear.

‘Well, you have been quick (ну, ты оказался быстрым)!’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘But why did you bring so many people (но зачем ты привел так много народу)? Daddy dear, this is my surprise (дорогой Папочка, это мой сюрприз). Are you surprised, Daddy (ты удивлен, Папочка)?’

‘Very,’ said Tegumai (очень, — сказал Тегумай); ‘but it has ruined all my fishing for the day (но это испортило всю мою рыбалку на весь день; to ruin — погубить, испортить). Why, the whole dear, kind, nice, clean, quiet Tribe is here, Taffy (да ведь все дорогое, любезное, милое, непорочное, тихое Племя здесь, Тэффи; quiet — тихий, спокойный, молчаливый).’

ruin ['rHIn], whole [hqul], quiet ['kwaIqt]

‘Well, you have been quick!’ said Taffy. ‘But why did you bring so many people? Daddy dear, this is my surprise. Are you surprised, Daddy?’

‘Very,’ said Tegumai; ‘but it has ruined all my fishing for the day. Why, the whole dear, kind, nice, clean, quiet Tribe is here, Taffy.’
