She fluttered in front of Nagaina by the rubbish heap and cried out, “Oh, my wing is broken! The boy in the house threw a stone at me and broke it.” Then she fluttered more desperately than ever.

Nagaina lifted up her head and hissed, “You warned Rikki-tikki when I would have killed him. Indeed and truly, you’ve chosen a bad place to be lame in.” And she moved toward Darzee’s wife, slipping along over the dust.

“The boy broke it with a stone (мальчик сломал = перебил его камнем)!” shrieked Darzee’s wife (выкрикнула жена Дарзи; to shriek – пронзительно кричать).

“Well (ну)! It may be some consolation to you when you’re dead to know that I shall settle accounts with the boy (может быть, для тебя будет некоторым утешением знать, что, когда ты будешь мертва = умрешь, я сведу счеты с этим мальчиком; to settle – урегулировать; оплачивать /что-либо/; расплачиваться; разделаться, расквитаться; account – счет). My husband lies on the rubbish heap this morning (мой муж лежит на куче мусора этим утром), but before night the boy in the house will lie very still (но до ночи = раньше, чем наступит ночь, мальчик будет лежать в доме очень тихо). What is the use of running away (какой толк убегать)? I am sure to catch you (я уверена, что поймаю тебя). Little fool, look at me (маленькая дурочка, посмотри на меня)!”

“The boy broke it with a stone!” shrieked Darzee’s wife.

“Well! It may be some consolation to you when you’re dead to know that I shall settle accounts with the boy. My husband lies on the rubbish heap this morning, but before night the boy in the house will lie very still. What is the use of running away? I am sure to catch you. Little fool, look at me!”

Darzee’s wife knew better than to do that (жена Дарзи была не так глупа, чтобы делать это; to know better than to do smth. – быть не таким глупым, чтобы делать что-либо), for a bird who looks at a snake’s eyes gets so frightened that she cannot move (потому что птица, которая смотрит в глаза змеи, так пугается, что не может двигаться = теряет способность двигаться). Darzee’s wife fluttered on, piping sorrowfully (жена Дарзи продолжала порхать, печально попискивая; to pipe – играть на свирели; свистеть, пищать /о птице/), and never leaving the ground (и не покидая = не отрываясь от земли), and Nagaina quickened her pace (и Нагайна ускорила шаг = поползла быстрее; to quicken – ускорять/ся/; quick – быстрый).
