Darzee’s wife knew better than to do that, for a bird who looks at a snake’s eyes gets so frightened that she cannot move. Darzee’s wife fluttered on, piping sorrowfully, and never leaving the ground, and Nagaina quickened her pace.

At last there were only three eggs left (наконец осталось только три яйца; to leave), and Rikki-tikki began to chuckle to himself (и Рикки-Тикки начал уж было хихикать про себя; to chuckle – /тихо/ смеяться, посмеиваться), when he heard Darzee’s wife screaming (как вдруг услышал крик жены Дарзи; to scream – пронзительно кричать, вопить):

“Rikki-tikki, I led Nagaina toward the house (Рикки-Тикки, я увела Нагайну к дому; to lead – вести, быть проводником), and she has gone into the veranda (и она вошла = вползла на веранду), and – oh, come quickly (и – о, идем скорее) – she means killing (она намерена убивать)!”
