The uneasiness I am speaking of was caused by a faint doubt in my mind (беспокойство, о котором я говорю, было вызвано слабым сомнением в моей душе; uneasiness – беспокойство; неловкость) whether I had not seen her somewhere (не видел ли я ее где-нибудь), before the morning when we met at the doctor’s house (до того утра, когда мы встретились в доме доктора). Over and over again, I found myself wondering (снова и снова я задавался вопросом) whether her face did not remind me of some other face (не напоминало ли мне ее лицо какое-то другое лицо = чье-то еще) – what other I never could tell (чье – я так и не мог сказать). This strange feeling, this one question that could never be answered (это странное чувство, этот вопрос, на который всё не было ответа), vexed me to a degree that you would hardly credit (раздражали/сердили меня до такой степени, что вы вряд ли поверите). It came between us at the strangest times (это чувство возникало между нами в самые необычайные минуты) – oftenest, however, at night (чаще всего, однако, ночью; often – часто), when the candles were lit (когда свечи были зажжены; to light).

This strange feeling, this one question that could never be answered, vexed me to a degree that you would hardly credit. It came between us at the strangest times – oftenest, however, at night, when the candles were lit.

You have known what it is to try and remember a forgotten name (вам /должно быть/ известно, каково это – пытаться вспомнить забытое имя) – and to fail, search as you may, to find it in your mind (и потерпеть неудачу, несмотря на все попытки отыскать его в памяти). That was my case (таким был мой случай). I failed to find my lost face (я не мог найти /в памяти/ забытое лицо), just as you failed to find your lost name (как вы не могли вспомнить забытое имя).
