It was a relief to me when Alicia began to prepare the table for dinner (для меня было облегчением, когда Алисия начала готовить стол к обеду).

 I was able to take my mother quietly into the parlor and then to prepare my wife for the visit. She had drunk but little at that early hour; and, luckily, the devil in her was tamed for the time.

She laid the cloth (она постелила скатерть; cloth – ткань; скатерть), brought in the bread tray (принесла поднос с хлебом; tray – поднос), and cut some slices for us from the loaf (и отрезала для нас несколько кусков от буханки). Then she returned to the kitchen (затем она вернулась на кухню). At that moment, while I was still anxiously watching my mother (в эту минуту, когда я все еще тревожно наблюдал за матушкой; anxious – беспокоящийся, тревожащийся), I was startled by seeing the same ghastly change pass over her face (я вздрогнул, увидев ту же страшную перемену, прошедшую по ее лицу = в ее лице; to startle – испугать; поразить; вздрогнуть) which had altered it in the morning (которая изменила его в то утро) when Alicia and she first met (когда они с Алисией впервые встретились). “Take me back (отвези меня домой)! – home, home again, Francis (домой, домой, Фрэнсис)! Come with me, and never go back more (пойдем со мной, и никогда больше не возвращайся /сюда/)!”

I was afraid to ask for an explanation (я побоялся спросить объяснения); I could only sign her to be silent (я только сделал ей знак молчать: «быть безмолвной»; to sign – выражать жестом; подавать знак), and help her quickly to the door (и быстро повел ее к двери). As we passed the bread tray on the table (когда мы проходили мимо хлебного подноса на столе), she stopped and pointed to it (она остановилась и указала на него).
