I apologised.	Я извинился.
Dignified sniff and cough. He resumed.	Он снисходительно фыркнул, откашлялся и продолжал.
He'd read it.	Рецепт он прочел.
Five ingredients.	Пять ингредиентов.
Put it down; turned his head.	Положил на стол, отвернулся.
Draught of air from window lifted the paper. Swish, rustle.	Вдруг шорох: бумажку подхватило сквозняком.
He was working in a room with an open fireplace, he said.	Каминная труба была открыта.
Saw a flicker, and there was the prescription burning and lifting chimneyward.	Пламя вспыхнуло, и не успел он оглянуться, как рецепт сгорел и пепел вылетел в трубу.
Rushed towards it just as it whisked up the chimney.	Бросился к камину - поздно.
So!	Вот!
Just at that point, to illustrate his story, out came his arm."	Тут он безнадежно махнул рукой.
"Well?"	-Ну?
"No hand-just an empty sleeve.	- А руки-то и нет - пустой рукав.
Lord! I thought, that's a deformity!	"Господи, - подумал я, - вот калека-то.
Got a cork arm, I suppose, and has taken it off.	Вероятно, у него деревянная рука, и он ее снял.
Then, I thought, there's something odd in that.	И все-таки, - подумал я, - тут что-то неладно.
What the devil keeps that sleeve up and open, if there's nothing in it?	Как же это рукав не повиснет, если в нем ничего нет?"
There was nothing in it, I tell you.	А в нем ничего не было, уверяю вас.
Nothing down it, right down to the joint.	Совершенно пустой рукав, до самого локтя.
I could see right down it to the elbow, and there was a glimmer of light shining through a tear of the cloth.	Я видел, что рукав пуст, и, кроме того, прореха светилась насквозь.
' Good God!' I said.	"Боже милосердный!" - воскликнул я.
Then he stopped.	Тогда он замолчал.
Stared at me with those black goggles of his, and then at his sleeve."	Уставился своими синими очками сначала на меня, потом на свой рукав.
"Well?"	-Ну?
"That's all.	- И все.
He never said a word; just glared, and put his sleeve back in his pocket quickly.	Не сказал ни слова, только глянул на меня и быстро засунул рукав в карман.
'I was saying,' said he, 'that there was the prescription burning, wasn't I?'	"Я, кажется, остановился на том, как рецепт сгорел?"
Interrogative cough.	Он вопросительно кашлянул.
