The little, old man was looking curiously at me with his one eye.	Старичок своим одиноким глазом поглядывал на меня с любопытством.
"Might I presume to ask you," said he to me, "in what regiment you have deigned to serve?"	"Смею спросить" - сказал он; - "вы в каком полку изволили служить?"

"And might I ask you," continued he, "why you have condescended to exchange from the Guard into our garrison?"	"А смею спросить" - продолжал он, - "зачем изволили вы перейти из гвардии в гарнизон?" - Я отвечал, что такова была воля начальства.
I replied that it was by order of the authorities. "Probably for conduct unbecoming an officer of the Guard?" rejoined my indefatigable questioner.	"Чаятельно, за неприличные гвардии офицеру поступки" - продолжал неутомимый вопрошатель.

"Ought not his excellency to go to Iw?n Pol?ja?eff?"	"Не поместить ли его благородие к Ивану Полежаеву?" -
"You are doting, Maximitch," retorted the Commandant's wife; "Pol?ja?eff has already little enough room; and, besides, he is my gossip; and then he does not forget that we are his superiors.	"Врешь, Максимыч", - сказала капитанша: - "у Полежаева и так тесно; он же мне кум и помнит, что мы его начальники.
