Summary
The chapter discusses the aggressive beginnings of media discourses by radical feminists and antifeminists in France in the context of the #MeToo movement that originated in the USA and its French version #Balancetonporc. In order to study different ideas of feminism in the French press, we selected articles published in three representative French editions (Le Monde, Le Figaro, Elle) from February 2017 to February 2018, that is, in our sample we covered a very important year for the international women’s movement – the year when Women’s march in Washington was organised for the first time and which has spread to other cities around the world, and the year of creating a feminist #MeToo movement. However, in the atmosphere of the rise of feminism and the demands of modern radical feminists, a new reciprocal flow of antifeminism has emerged.
#MeToo launched a global discussion on the position of women in the world and the media reacted to a resurgent movement for social change. In this study of the media discourse of journals, we applied quantitative and qualitative analysis: general structure of the media texts was determined based on the observations; then we clarified our approach through a qualitative and detailed analysis of these texts, defined the typology of the discourse based on the first stage of the research and then we analyzed specific words in the texts, potential motivations and other qualifiers.
The media in France had a clear division into those who, like Le Monde, are more favorable of feminist ideals, and those who, like Le Figaro perceive feminism as one type of totalitarianism. The fashionable magazine Elle took an unusual position on this issue and has adopted feminism as a new trend in fashion, literature, cinema…
