(Заметьте, что all day, all night и т. п. могут служить также обстоятельствами прошедшего времени. This morning также может указывать на прошлое, если это словосочетание употребляется во второй половине дня, вечером. Например: Did you get to school in time this morning?

Для выражения действия; которое происходило в прошлом до какого-то прошедшего-момента или периода, обозначенного обстоятельственными словами или подразумеваемого, употребляется предпрошедшее время (Past Perfect Tense). Если нужно подчеркнуть длительность действия или показать, что оно захватило и упомянутый момент или отрезок времени в прошлом, пользуются предпрошедщим длительным. Вспомните правила употребления простого преднастоящего и преднастоящего длительного.1. As soon as the teacher entered the’ classroom, he saw that one of the boys had drawn a sketch of him on the blackboard.
2. When Brown came to the school in 1950, Green had already been teaching there for five years.
3. By three o’clock he had answered only half the letters he had received that morning.
4. In 1950 he had been married (for) ten years.

6. On reaching the station, he found that his friends had just arrived.
