"Of what nature, precisely, IS your business?" countered one of the youthful officials as he turned himself round.	"А что вам нужно?" сказали оба чиновника, оборотившись.
"I desire to make an application."	"А мне нужно подать просьбу".
"In connection with a purchase?"	"А вы что купили такое?"
"Yes. But, as I say, I should like first to know where I can find the desk devoted to such business. Is it here or elsewhere?"	"Я бы хотел прежде знать, где крепостной стол, здесь или в другом месте?"
"You must state what it is you have bought, and for how much. THEN we shall be happy to give you the information."	"Да скажите прежде, что купили и в какую цену, так мы вам тогда и скажем где, а так нельзя знать".
Chichikov perceived that the officials' motive was merely one of curiosity, as often happens when young tchinovniks desire to cut a more important and imposing figure than is rightfully theirs.	Чичиков тотчас увидел, что чиновники были просто любопытны, подобно всем молодым чиновникам, и хотели придать более весу и значения себе и своим занятиям.
"Look here, young sirs," he said. "I know for a fact that all serf business, no matter to what value, is transacted at one desk alone. Consequently I again request you to direct me to that desk. Of course, if you do not know your business I can easily ask some one else."	"Послушайте, любезные", сказал он: "я очень хорошо знаю, что все дела по крепостям, в какую бы ни было цену, находятся в одном месте, а потому прошу вас показать нам стол, а если вы не знаете, что у вас делается, так мы спросим у других".
To this the tchinovniks made no reply beyond pointing towards a corner of the room where an elderly man appeared to be engaged in sorting some papers.	Чиновники на это ничего не отвечали, один из них только тыкнул пальцем в угол комнаты, где сидел за столом какой-то старик, перемечавший какие-то бумаги.
Accordingly Chichikov and Manilov threaded their way in his direction through the desks; whereupon the elderly man became violently busy.	Чичиков и Манилов прошли промеж столами прямо к нему. Старик занимался очень внимательно.
"Would you mind telling me," said Chichikov, bowing, "whether this is the desk for serf affairs?"	"Позвольте узнать", сказал Чичиков с поклоном: "здесь дела по крепостям?"
The elderly man raised his eyes, and said stiffly:	Старик поднял глаза и произнес с расстановкою:
"This is NOT the desk for serf affairs."	"Здесь нет дел по крепостям".
"Where is it, then?"	"А где же?"
"In the Serf Department."	"Это в крепостной экспедиции".
"And where might the Serf Department be?"	"А где же крепостная экспедиция?"
"In charge of Ivan Antonovitch."	"Это у Ивана Антоновича".
"And where is Ivan Antonovitch?"	"А где же Иван Антонович?"
The elderly man pointed to another corner of the room; whither Chichikov and Manilov next directed their steps.	Старик тыкнул пальцем в другой угол комнаты. Чичиков и Манилов отправились к Ивану Антоновичу.
As they advanced, Ivan Antonovitch cast an eye backwards and viewed them askance. Then, with renewed ardour, he resumed his work of writing.	Иван Антонович уже запустил один глаз назад и оглянул их искоса, но в ту же минуту погрузился еще внимательнее в писание.
"Would you mind telling me," said Chichikov, bowing, "whether this is the desk for serf affairs?"	"Позвольте узнать", сказал Чичиков с поклоном: "здесь крепостной стол?"
