The ferryman got him across the river on his bamboo-raft, the wide water shimmered reddishly in the light of the morning.	Тот перевез его через реку на своем бамбуковом плоту. Красным светом мерцала широкая река на утреннем солнце.
"This is a beautiful river," he said to his companion.	- Прекрасная река! - заметил Сиддхартха своему спутнику.
"Yes," said the ferryman, "a very beautiful river, I love it more than anything.	- Да, - сказал перевозчик, - это прекрасная река, я люблю ее больше всего.
Often I have listened to it, often I have looked into its eyes, and always I have learned from it.	Часто я прислушиваюсь к ней, часто заглядываю ей в очи, и всякий раз чему-нибудь научаюсь от нее.
Much can be learned from a river."	Многому можно научиться у реки.
"I than you, my benefactor," spoke Siddhartha, disembarking on the other side of the river. "I have no gift I could give you for your hospitality, my dear, and also no payment for your work.	- Благодарю тебя, милостивец, - сказал Сиддхартха, выйдя на берег. - Мне нечем заплатить тебе за гостеприимство и переправу.
I am a man without a home, a son of a Brahman and a Samana."	Я бездомный скиталец. Я сын брахмана и самана.
"I did see it," spoke the ferryman, "and I haven't expected any payment from you and no gift which would be the custom for guests to bear.	- Я и сам догадался, кто ты, - сказал перевозчик, -и не ждал от тебя ни платы, ни иного вознаграждения.
You will give me the gift another time."	Ты оплатишь мне в другой раз.
"Do you think so?" asked Siddhartha amusedly.	-Ты думаешь? - весело спросил Сиддхартха.
"Surely.	- Уверен.
This too, I have learned from the river: everything is coming back!	Вот еще одно, что я узнал от реки: все возвращаются.
You too, Samana, will come back.	И ты, самана, вернешься сюда.
Now farewell!	А теперь прощай.
Let your friendship be my reward.	Да будет твоя дружба мне наградой.
Commemorate me, when you'll make offerings to the gods."	Вспоминай меня всегда, когда будешь приносить жертвы богам.
Smiling, they parted.	С улыбкой они попрощались друг с другом.
Smiling, Siddhartha was happy about the friendship and the kindness of the ferryman.	С радостным чувством Сиддхартха думал о дружбе и приветливости перевозчика.
"He is like Govinda," he thought with a smile, "all I meet on my path are like Govinda.	"Он совсем как Говинда, - думал Сиддхартха, улыбаясь.
All are thankful, though they are the ones who would have a right to receive thanks.	Все, кого я ни встречаю на своем пути, похожи на Говинду.
All are submissive, all would like to be friends, like to obey, think little.	Все благодарны, хотя сами имеют право на благодарность. Все почтительны, все готовы стать друзьями, охотно повинуются и мало думают.
Like children are all people."	Похожи на детей люди!"
