In front of the mud cottages, children were rolling about in the street, were playing with pumpkin-seeds and sea-shells, screamed and wrestled, but they all timidly fled from the unknown Samana. In the end of the village, the path led through a stream, and by the side of the stream, a young woman was kneeling and washing clothes.	В конце деревни дорогу пересекал ручей, а на берегу ручья стояла на коленях молодая женщина и стирала.
When Siddhartha greeted her, she lifted her head and looked up to him with a smile, so that he saw the white in her eyes glistening.	Когда Сиддхартха приветствовал ее, она подняла голову и с улыбкой взглянула на него, причем он заметил, как блеснули белки ее глаз.
He called out a blessing to her, as it is the custom among travellers, and asked how far he still had to go to reach the large city.	Он крикнул ей обычное приветствие странствующих монахов и спросил, как далеко еще до большого города.
Then she got up and came to him, beautifully her wet mouth was shimmering in her young face.	Тогда она поднялась с места и подошла к нему. Ее влажные губы красиво алели на молодом лице.
She exchanged humorous banter with him, asked whether he had eaten already, and whether it was true that the Samanas slept alone in the forest at night and were not allowed to have any women with them.	Она стала обмениваться с ним шутками, спросила, поел ли он и правда ли, что саманы проводят ночи в лесу одни и не могут иметь при себе женщин.
While talking, she put her left foot on his right one and made a movement as a woman does who would want to initiate that kind of sexual pleasure with a man, which the textbooks call "climbing a tree".	При этом она опустила свою левую ногу на его правую и сделал такое дви жение, какое делает женщина, приглашающая мужчину к любовному наслаждению.
Siddhartha felt his blood heating up, and since in this moment he had to think of his dream again, he bend slightly down to the woman and kissed with his lips the brown nipple of her breast.	Сиддхартха почувствовал, как закипает в нем кровь, и так как в эту минуту ему вспомнился сон, то он смело наклонился к женщине и коснулся губами темного соска на ее груди.
Looking up, he saw her face smiling full of lust and her eyes, with contracted pupils, begging with desire.	А когда он поднял глаза, то на ее улыбающемся лице прочел желание, а в сузившихся глазах страстную мольбу.
Siddhartha also felt desire and felt the source of his sexuality moving; but since he had never touched a woman before, he hesitated for a moment, while his hands were already prepared to reach out for her.	И Сиддхартхой овладел прилив вожделения. Но так как он ни разу еще не коснулся женщины, то с минуту помедлил, хотя руки его уже протягивались, чтобы охватить ее.
And in this moment he heard, shuddering with awe, the voice if his innermost self, and this voice said No.	И в эту-то минуту он с содроганием услышал внутренний голос, и голос этот сказал: "Нет".
Then, all charms disappeared from the young woman's smiling face, he no longer saw anything else but the damp glance of a female animal in heat.	И тотчас же улыбающееся лицо молодой женщины утратило для него все свое очарование, и он увидел лишь влажный взор охваченной вожделением самки.
Politely, he petted her cheek, turned away from her and disappeared away from the disappointed woman with light steps into the bamboo-wood.	Ласково потрепал он ее по щеке, повернулся и проворно скрылся из глаз разочарованной женщины в бамбуковой роще.
