This did not hurt the Scarecrow, but it surprised him, and he looked rather dizzy when Dorothy picked himup.	Страшила не ушибся, но сильно удивился.
"Here is another space between the trees, " called the Lion.	- Вон там еще просвет между деревьями! - сказал Лев.
"Let me try it first, " said the Scarecrow, "for it doesn't hurt me to get thrown about. " He walked up to another tree, as he spoke, but its branches immediately seized him and tossed him back again.	- Давайте я опять рискну, - предложил Страшила.- Мне ведь не больно падать. - С этими словами он подошел туда, куда показывал Лев, но снова ветви сплелись вокруг него и отбросили назад.
"This is strange, " exclaimed Dorothy.	- Ничего себе лес! - воскликнула Дороти.
"What shall we do? "	- Что же нам делать?
"The trees seem to have made up their minds to fight us, and stop our journey, " remarked the Lion.	- Деревья, похоже, решили объявить нам войну, -догадался Лев, - они хотят заставить нас отступить.
"I believe I will try it myself, " said the Woodman, and shouldering his axe, he marched up to the first tree that had handled the Scarecrow so roughly.	- Придется мне немножко поработать, - сказал Железный Дровосек, и с топором на плече решительно зашагал к дереву, что так грубо обошлось со Страшилой.
When a big branch bent down to seize him the Woodman chopped at it so fiercely that he cut it in two.	Когда к нему потянулась большая ветка, Дровосек ударил по ней топором с такой силой, что разрубил ее пополам.
At once the tree began shaking all its branches as if in pain, and the Tin Woodman passed safely under it.	Дерево закачало ветвями, словно от боли, но не помешало Дровосеку войти в лес.
"Come on! " he shouted to the others.	- За мной! - крикнул он друзьям.
"Be quick! " They all ran forward and passed under the tree without injury, except Toto, who was caught by a small branch and shaken until he howled.	- И побыстрей! Путешественники бегом кинулись к дереву и прошли под его ветвями без помех. Только Тотошку ухватила маленькая ветка и стала трясти его так, что он завыл.
But the Woodman promptly chopped off the branch and set the little dog free.	Но тут на помощь песику подоспел Дровосек и, отрубив ветку, освободил Тотошку.
The other trees of the forest did nothing to keep them back, so they made up their minds that only the first row of trees could bend down their branches, and that probably these were the policemen of the forest, and given this wonderful power in order to keep strangers out of it.	Прочие деревья в лесу вели себя смирно и никому не мешали идти. Друзья решили, что только деревья по краям ведут себя так необычно, словно полицейские, не пускающие людей куда не положено.
The four travelers walked with ease through the trees until they came to the farther edge of the wood.	Путешественники без приключений прошли через весь лее.
Then, to their surprise, they found before them a high wall which seemed to be made of white china.	Но тут, к их великому удивлению, они натолкнулись на высокую-превысокую стену, сделанную, по всей видимости, из белого китайского фарфора.
It was smooth, like the surface of a dish, and higher than their heads.	Стена была выше самого высокого из путников, и поверхность ее была гладкая, как у фарфорового блюда.
"What shall we do now? " asked Dorothy.	- Что же теперь делать? - спросила Дороти.
