Both went to the table to play (вдвоем они сели к столу, чтобы сыграть /в карты/: «оба пошли к столу чтобы поиграть»), and they were not long playing cards (и недолго они играли в карты) when the hare ran in (когда вовнутрь вбежал заяц); and before they could stop him (и прежде, чем они смогли остановить его) he was on the table (он оказался на столе), and had put it in such a state (и привел его в такое состояние; to put – класть, положить; приводить в определенное состояние или положение) that they could not play on it longer (что они не смогли бы играть на нем больше: «дольше») if they had wanted to (/даже/ если бы захотели).

But the cowboy made after the hare (но пастух последовал за тем зайцем; to make /made/ – делать; to make after smb., smth. – следовать за кем-л., преследовать кого-л.), and the Gruagach after the cowboy (а Груагах – за пастухом), and they ran as fast as ever their legs could carry them till nightfall (и они бежали так быстро, как только их ноги могли нести их, до наступления ночи); and when the hare was entering the castle (и когда заяц вбегал: «входил» в замок) where the twelve sons of the Gruagach were killed (где были убиты двенадцать сыновей Груагаха), the cowboy caught him by the two hind legs (пастух поймал его за две задние ноги; to catch /caught/; leg – нога /от бедра до ступни/; нога, лапа /животного/) and dashed out his brains against the wall (и выбил ему мозги: «его мозги» /ударом/ об стену; to dash – бросать, швырять; разбивать); and the skull of the hare was knocked into the chief room of the castle (а череп зайца влетел: «был выбит» в главную комнату замка; to knock – стучать; ударять, бить, колотить), and fell at the feet of the master of the place (и упал у ног хозяина того места; to fall /fell, fallen/).

 But the cowboy made after the hare, and the Gruagach after the cowboy, and they ran as fast as ever their legs could carry them till nightfall; and when the hare was entering the castle where the twelve sons of the Gruagach were killed, the cowboy caught him by the two hind legs and dashed out his brains against the wall; and the skull of the hare was knocked into the chief room of the castle, and fell at the feet of the master of the place.

“Who has dared to interfere with my fighting pet (кто осмелился помешать моему бойцовому питомцу; to interfere – вмешиваться; мешать; pet – питомец, /любимое/ домашнее животное)?” screamed he (завопил он).

“I,” said the cowboy; “and if your pet had had manners (и если бы твой питомец умел себя вести: «имел бы хорошие манеры»; manner – метод, способ, образ действия; воспитанность, хорошие манеры), he might be alive now (он мог бы быть сейчас жив).”
