About sunset there was a terrible noise (почти на закате раздался: «был» ужасный шум; about – вокруг, повсюду; около, приблизительно, почти; terrible – страшный, внушающий страх; /эмоц. – усил./ ужасный, жуткий, кошмарный), and in rushed the man of the castle (и внутрь ворвался хозяин замка) in the form of a tremendous salmon (в облике огромного лосося; tremendous – ужасный, страшный; огромный). He went flapping upstairs (он пошел, шлепая /плавниками,/ вверх по лестнице; flap – хлопок, шлепок, удар /чем-л. гибким и широким/; to flap – хлопать, шлепать, ударять /чем-л. гибким и широким/); but he wasn’t long there (но он не долго пробыл там) till he came down a fine-looking man (когда он спустился /в облике/ красивого мужчины; fine – ясный, хороший; прекрасный, замечательный; to look – смотреть, глядеть; выглядеть, иметь вид, казаться).

 About sunset there was a terrible noise, and in rushed the man of the castle in the form of a tremendous salmon. He went flapping upstairs; but he wasn’t long there till he came down a fine-looking man.

“Who is that with you (кто это с тобой)?” asked he of the wife (спросил он у жены). “I thought you would let no one into the castle (я думал, ты никого не впустишь в замок) while I was gone (пока меня нет: «я был ушедшим»).”

“Oh! this is my brother (это мой брат), who has come to see me (который пришел повидать меня),” said she.

“If he’s your brother (если это: «он» твой брат), he’s welcome (то милости просим: «он желанный»; welcome – желанный, приятный, долгожданный),” said the man.

 “Who is that with you?” asked he of the wife. “I thought you would let no one into the castle while I was gone.”

“Oh! this is my brother, who has come to see me,” said she.

“If he’s your brother, he’s welcome,” said the man.

They supped (они поужинали; sup – маленький глоток; to sup – прихлебывать, отхлебывать /небольшими глотками/; ужинать, кормить ужином), and then slept till morning (а затем спали до утра; to sleep /slept/). When the man of the castle was going out again (когда хозяин замка снова собирался уйти из дома), in the form of a great salmon (в облике огромного лосося), he turned to the boy and said (он повернулся к юноше и сказал), “You’d better stay here with us a while (ты бы лучше остался здесь с нами на какое-то время; while – время, промежуток времени).”

 They supped, and then slept till morning. When the man of the castle was going out again, in the form of a great salmon, he turned to the boy and said, “You’d better stay here with us a while.”

“I cannot (я не могу),” said the boy. “I made a vow never to sleep three nights in one house (я дал клятву никогда не спать три ночи /подряд/ в одном /и том же/ доме) till I had seen my three sisters (пока я не повидаю трех своих сестер). I must go on now (теперь я должен идти дальше) and find my third sister (и найти свою третью сестру).”
