 She threw back her hair, looked at the prince, and said, “You are welcome, sister’s son! What brought you to this place? Was it the misfortune of the world that brought you to live under Druidic spells like me and my sisters?” This was the elder sister of the queen of the Lonesome Island.

“No,” said the prince; “I am going to Tubber Tintye (я собираюсь к Таббер Тинти) for three bottles of water from the flaming well (за тремя бутылками воды из огненного колодца).”

“Oh, sister’s son, it’s a hard journey you’re on (о, племянник, ты отправился в трудное путешествие: «о, сын сестры, это тяжелое путешествие, в котором ты находишься»; hard – твердый, прочный; трудный, тяжелый, требующий напряжения)! But stay here tonight (но /прежде/ останься здесь этой ночью); tomorrow morning I’ll tell you all (завтра утром я расскажу тебе все).”

 “No,” said the prince; “I am going to Tubber Tintye for three bottles of water from the flaming well.”

“Oh, sister’s son, it’s a hard journey you’re on! But stay here tonight; tomorrow morning I’ll tell you all.”

In the morning the prince’s aunt said (утром тетя принца сказала), “The queen of the Island of Tubber Tintye has an enormous castle (у королевы Острова Таббер Тинти огромный дворец), in which she lives (в котором она живет). She has a countless army of giants (у нее бесчисленная армия великанов; to count – считать, подсчитывать), beasts (диких зверей), and monsters (и чудовищ; monster – урод; чудовище, монстр) to guard the castle and the flaming well (чтобы охранять замок и огненный колодец). There are thousands upon thousands of them (там их тысячи и тысячи: «тысячи за тысячами»; upon – на), of every form and size (всех видов и размеров: «каждого вида и размера»; form – форма, внешний вид; вид, разновидность, тип).

 In the morning the prince’s aunt said, “The queen of the Island of Tubber Tintye has an enormous castle, in which she lives. She has a countless army of giants, beasts, and monsters to guard the castle and the flaming well. There are thousands upon thousands of them, of every form and size.

When they get drowsy (когда они становятся сонными; to get – получать; становиться, делаться), and sleep comes on them (и сон нисходит на них), they sleep for seven years without waking (он беспробудно спят семь лет: «они спят семь лет без пробуждения»). The queen has twelve attendant maidens (у королевы есть двенадцать служанок; attendant – слуга; maiden – дева, девица), who live in twelve chambers (которые живут в двенадцати комнатах). She is in the thirteenth and innermost chamber herself (сама она /живет/ в тринадцатой и самой удаленной комнате; innermost – находящийся в самой глубине; самый дальний, внутренний). The queen and the maidens sleep during the same seven years (королева и служанки спят в течение тех же семи лет) as the giants and beasts (что и великаны с дикими животными).
