The aunt dismissed the birds (тетя отпустила птиц); and turning to the prince, said (и, повернувшись к принцу, сказала), “Here is a bridle for you (вот тебе уздечка: «здесь уздечка для тебя»). Go to the stables (иди к конюшням), shake the bridle (потряси уздечкой), and put it on whatever horse runs out to meet you (и надень ее на того коня: «любого коня», который выбежит к тебе навстречу: «встретить тебя»).”

 The aunt dismissed the birds; and turning to the prince, said, “Here is a bridle for you. Go to the stables, shake the bridle, and put it on whatever horse runs out to meet you.”

Now the second son of the queen of Erin said (тут второй сын королевы Ирландии сказал),

“I am too sick to go farther (я слишком болен, чтобы идти дальше).”

“Well, stay here till I come back (что ж, оставайся здесь, пока я не вернусь: «не приду назад»),” said the prince (сказал принц), who took the bridle and went out (который взял уздечку и вышел /из дома/).

 Now the second son of the queen of Erin said,

“I am too sick to go farther.”

“Well, stay here till I come back,” said the prince, who took the bridle and went out.

The prince of the Lonesome Island stood in front of his aunt’s stables (принц Одинокого Острова встал перед конюшнями своей тети), shook the bridle (потряс уздечкой; to shake /shook, shaken/), and out came a dirty (и /из конюшни/ вышел грязный), lean (тощий) little shaggy horse (низкорослый косматый конь; little – маленький, небольшой /о размере/; невысокий, небольшого роста).

“Sit on my back (садись мне на спину: «на мою спину»), son of the king of Erin and the queen of Lonesome Island (сын короля Ирландии и королевы Одинокого Острова),” said the little shaggy horse (сказал низкорослый косматый конек).

 The prince of the Lonesome Island stood in front of his aunt’s stables, shook the bridle, and out came a dirty, lean little shaggy horse.

“Sit on my back, son of the king of Erin and the queen of Lonesome Island,” said the little shaggy horse.

This was the first time (это был /самый/ первый раз; time – время; раз, случай) the prince had heard of his father (когда принц узнал: «услышал» о своем отце; to hear /heard/ – слышать; узнавать /о чем-л./). He had often wondered (он часто терялся в догадках; to wonder – удивляться, изумляться; интересоваться, желать знать) who he might be (кто он мог быть = кто же его отец), but had never heard who he was before (но он никогда прежде не слышал, кем /именно/ он был).

 This was the first time the prince had heard of his father. He had often wondered who he might be, but had never heard who he was before.
