Then the snow came (затем пришел = выпал снег; to come (came, come)), and after the snow came the frost (а за снегом пришел и мороз). The streets looked as if they were made of silver (улицы выглядели так, словно они /были сделаны/ из серебра), they were so bright and glistening (такими они были яркими/блестящими и сверкающими); long icicles like crystal daggers (длинные сосульки, похожие на хрустальные кинжалы) hung down from the eaves of the houses (свисали с карнизов домов; to hang (hung, hanged) — вешать, висеть; eaves — свес крыши, венчающий карниз), everybody went about in furs (все расхаживали = оделись в шубы; to go (went, gone) about — ходить туда и сюда, слоняться; fur — мех, шкура), and the little boys wore scarlet caps (и маленькие мальчики носили алые шапки; to wear (wore, worn)) and skated on the ice (и катались по льду на коньках).

The poor little Swallow grew colder and colder (бедный маленький Ласточка замерзал все больше и больше: «становился все холоднее и холоднее»; to grow (grew, grown)) but he would not leave the Prince (но он не хотел оставлять Принца), he loved him too well (он очень сильно любил его). He picked up crumbs (он подбирал крошки; to pick — выбирать, собирать) outside the baker's door (у двери пекаря/булочника; outside — снаружи, на улице) where the baker was not looking (там, где булочник не видел; to bake — печь, выпекать), and tried to keep himself warm (и пытался согреться: «оставаться теплой»; to try — пытаться) by flapping his wings (хлопая крыльями; to flap — колыхать; махать, хлопать).

But at last he knew (но наконец он понял; to know (knew, known) — знать) that he was going to die (что он скоро умрет). He had just strength (у него было = осталось сил только /для того, чтобы/; strength — сила) to fly up to the Prince's shoulder once more (взлететь на плечо Принца еще раз).

`Good-bye, dear Prince (милый Принц)!' he murmured (прошептал он; to murmur — говорить тихо, бормотать), `will you let me kiss your hand (разрешишь ли ты мне поцеловать твою руку; to let — пускать; разрешить, позволить)?'
