`How shabby indeed (действительно, каким оборвышем)!' cried the Town Councillors (закричали Городские Советники), who always agreed with the Mayor (которые всегда соглашались с Мэром), and they went up to look at it (и они приблизились /к статуе/, чтобы взглянуть на нее).

`The ruby has fallen out of his sword (рубин вывалился из его шпаги), his eyes are gone (глаза исчезли; gone — пропащий, потерянный), and he is golden no longer (и он уж больше не золоченый),' said the Mayor; `in fact, he is little better than a beggar (на самом-то деле, он едва лучше попрошайки; to beg — просить; нищенствовать)!'

`Little better than a beggar (немногим лучше попрошайки)' said the Town councillors.

Early the next morning the Mayor was walking in the square below in company with the Town Councillors. As they passed the column he looked up at the statue: `Dear me! how shabby the Happy Prince looks!' he said.

`How shabby indeed!' cried the Town Councillors, who always agreed with the Mayor, and they went up to look at it.

`The ruby has fallen out of his sword, his eyes are gone, and he is golden no longer,' said the Mayor; `in fact, he is little better than a beggar!'

`Little better than a beggar' said the Town councillors.

`And here is actually a dead bird (и здесь еще и мертвая птица) at his feet (у его ног)!' continued the Mayor (продолжал Мэр). `We must really issue a proclamation (мы просто обязаны издать официальное объявление; to issue — выпускать; издавать указы) that birds are not to be allowed to die here (что птицам воспрещается умирать здесь; to allow — позволять, разрешать).'

And the Town Clerk (и Секретарь Городского Совета; clerk — конторский служащий; секретарь) made a note of the suggestion (записал /в книгу/ это предложение; to make (made); note — заметка, запись; to suggest — предлагать, советовать).

So they pulled down the statue of the Happy Prince (тогда они снесли статую Счастливого Принца; to pull — тянуть, тащить; down — вниз).

`As he is no longer beautiful (так как он уж больше не прекрасен) he is no longer useful (он больше уж и не нужен; useful — полезный, пригодный),' said the Art Professor at the University (сказал Профессор Искусствоведения в Университете; art — искусство; гуманитарные науки).
