Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder (вдруг он протер /свои/ глаза в изумлении; wonder — чудо, нечто удивительное), and looked and looked (и снова посмотрел /и посмотрел в окно/). One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep, and that the flowers were resting.

Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder, and looked and looked. It certainly was a marvellous sight. In the farthest corner of the garden was a tree quite covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden, and silver fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had loved.

Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy (Великан побежал вниз /по лестнице/, радуясь: «в большой радости»), and out into the garden (и из дома, в сад; to run (ran, run) out — выбегать). He hastened across the grass (он поспешил по траве; to hasten — спешить, торопиться), and came near to the child (и подошел к ребенку; to come near to — подходить, приближаться, near — близко, недалеко). And when he came quite close (и когда он подошел достаточно близко) his face grew red with anger (его лицо побагровело: «стало красным» от гнева; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться), and he said, “Who hath dared to wound thee (= who has dared to wound you; кто осмелился ранить тебя; to dare — сметь, отваживаться, иметь наглость)?” For on the palms of the child’s hands (так как на ладошках ребенка: «на ладонях рук ребенка») were the prints of two nails (были следы = раны от двух гвоздей; print — след, отпечаток, nail — ноготь; гвоздь), and the prints of two nails were on the little feet (и следы = раны от двух гвоздей были на маленьких ножках).

“Who hath dared to wound thee (кто осмелился ранить тебя)?” cried the Giant (закричал Великан); “tell me (скажи мне), that I may take my big sword (чтобы я мог взять свой большой меч; may — зд. выражает способность или возможность сделать что-либо) and slay him (и сразить его; to slay — убивать, умерщвлять; сразить).”
