“‘Buy back your wheelbarrow? You don’t mean to say you have sold it? What a very stupid thing to do’!

“‘Well, the fact is (ну, дело в том),’ said Hans, ‘that I was obliged to (что я был вынужден /сделать это/; to oblige — обязывать, заставлять). You see (видите ли) the winter was a very bad time for me (зима была очень тяжелым: «плохим» временем для меня), and I really had no money at all (и у меня действительно вовсе не было денег) to buy bread with (на которые /можно было бы/ купить хлеба). So I first sold (поэтому я сперва продал) the silver buttons off my Sunday coat (серебряные пуговицы со своей воскресной куртки), and then I sold my silver chain (и затем я продал свою серебряную цепочку), and then I sold my big pipe (и затем я продал свою большую курительную трубку; pipe — труба; трубка), and at last I sold my wheelbarrow (и, наконец, я продал свою тачку). But I am going to buy them all back again now (но теперь я снова все это выкуплю).’
