`So I breathed with my breath upon his eyes, and the sight came back to them, and he trembled again, and led me into the third chamber, and lo! there was no idol in it, nor image of any kind, but only a mirror of round metal set on an altar of stone.

`And I said to the priest, "Where is the god (где же бог)?"

`And he answered me: "There is no god (нет никакого бога) but this mirror that thou seest (кроме зеркала, которое ты видишь; thou seest = you see), for this is the Mirror of Wisdom (потому что это Зеркало Мудрости). And it reflecteth all things (и оно отражает все: «все вещи/существа») that are in heaven and on earth (что есть на небе и на земле), save only the face of him (за исключением только лица того) who looketh into it (кто смотрится в него). This it reflecteth not (оно не отражает этого = лица смотрящего), so that he who looketh into it (для того, чтобы тот, кто смотрится в него) may be wise (мог быть мудрым). Many other mirrors are there (есть много других зеркал), but they are mirrors of Opinion (но они — зеркала Мнения/Убеждения). This only is the Mirror of Wisdom (лишь это — Зеркало Мудрости). And they who possess this mirror (и те, которые обладают этим зеркалом) know everything (знают все), nor is there anything hidden from them (и нет ничего, скрытого от них; to hide (hid, hidden) — прятать, скрывать). And they who possess it not (а те, которые не обладают им) have not Wisdom (не имеют Мудрости). Therefore is it the god (поэтому это и есть бог), and we worship it (и мы покланяемся ему)." And I looked into the mirror (и я взглянула в то зеркало), and it was even (и все было точно так) as he had said to me (как он рассказал мне).

`And I said to the priest, "Where is the god?"

Many other mirrors are there, but they are mirrors of Opinion. This only is the Mirror of Wisdom. And they who possess this mirror know everything, nor is there anything hidden from them. And they who possess it not have not Wisdom. Therefore is it the god, and we worship it." And I looked into the mirror, and it was even as he had said to me.

`And I did a strange thing (и я совершила странный поступок; strange — незнакомый; странный, необычный), but what I did matters not (но то, что я сделала — не имеет значение; to matter — иметь значение), for in a valley (потому как в долине) that is but a day's journey from this place (которая находится всего лишь в дне пути от этого места = отсюда; journey — поездка, путешествие, преим. сухопутное) have I hidden the Mirror of Wisdom (я спрятала Зеркало Мудрости). Do but suffer me (только позволь мне; to do — делать; при глаголе употребляется для усиления; to suffer — страдать; позволять, допускать) to enter into thee again (снова войти в тебя) and be thy servant (и быть твоей служанкой), and thou shalt be wiser (и ты будешь мудрее) than all the wise men (чем все мудрецы), and Wisdom shall be thine (и сама Мудрость будет твоей). Suffer me to enter into thee (позволь мне войти в тебя), and none will be as wise as thou (и никто не будет также мудр, как ты).' But the young Fisherman laughed (но молодой Рыбак рассмеялся). `Love is better than Wisdom (Любовь лучше, чем Мудрость),' he cried (закричал он), `and the little Mermaid loves me (а маленькая Русалочка любит меня).'

`Nay, but there is nothing better than Wisdom (нет, нет ничего лучше, чем Мудрость),' said the Soul (сказала Душа).
