`Love is better (Любовь лучше),' answered the young Fisherman (ответил молодой рыбак), and he plunged into the deep (и он нырнул в глубину), and the Soul went weeping away over the marshes (и душа побрела, рыдая, по болотам; to go (went, gone)).

`And I did a strange thing, but what I did matters not, for in a valley that is but a day's journey from this place have I hidden the Mirror of Wisdom. Do but suffer me to enter into thee again and be thy servant, and thou shalt be wiser than all the wise men, and Wisdom shall be thine. Suffer me to enter into thee, and none will be as wise as thou.' But the young Fisherman laughed. `Love is better than Wisdom,' he cried, `and the little Mermaid loves me.'

`Nay, but there is nothing better than Wisdom,' said the Soul.

`Love is better,' answered the young Fisherman, and he plunged into the deep, and the Soul went weeping away over the marshes.

And after the second year was over (и, когда прошел: «закончился» второй год) the Soul came down to the shore of the sea (Душа спустилась к берегу моря), and called to the young Fisherman (и позвала молодого Рыбака), and he rose out of the deep (и он поднялся из глубины; to rise (rose, risen)) and said, `Why dost thou call to me (почему/зачем ты зовешь меня; dost thou = do you)?'

And the Soul answered (и Душа ответила), `Come nearer that I may speak with thee (подойди поближе, чтобы я смогла говорить с тобою), for I have seen marvellous things (потому как я видела изумительные/удивительные вещи).'

So he came nearer (и он подобрался поближе), and couched in the shallow water (и прилег на мелководье), and leaned his head upon his hand (и склонил свою голову на руку; to lean — прислонять, опирать) and listened (стал слушать).

And after the second year was over the Soul came down to the shore of the sea, and called to the young Fisherman, and he rose out of the deep and said, `Why dost thou call to me?'

And the Soul answered, `Come nearer that I may speak with thee, for I have seen marvellous things.'

So he came nearer, and couched in the shallow water, and leaned his head upon his hand and listened.

And the Soul said to him (и Душа сказала ему), `When I left thee (когда я оставила тебя; to leave (left)), I turned my face to the South (я повернулась лицом к Югу) and journeyed (и /отправилась/ путешествовать). From the South cometh every thing that is precious (с Юга приходит все самое драгоценное: «каждая вещь, которая драгоценна»). Six days I journeyed along the highways (шесть дней путешествовала я по большим дорогам) that lead to the city of Ashter (что ведут в город Аштер), along the dusty red-dyed highways (по пыльным, окрашенным в красный цвет большим дорогам; to dye — красить, окрашивать) by which the pilgrims are wont to go (по которым обычно передвигаются/ходят пилигримы; wont — имеющий обыкновение) did I journey (путешествовала я), and on the morning of the seventh day (и на утро седьмого дня) I lifted up my eyes (я подняла свои глаза), and lo! the city lay at my feet (и вот! у моих ног лежал город; to lie (lay, lain)), for it is in a valley (ибо он расположен в долине).
