Cooper frowned. He seemed to have difficulty in preventing himself from breaking out into violent invective. Mr. Warburton watched him, his little blue eyes narrowed, watched him and formed his opinion. Changing the conversation, he began to speak to Cooper about the work that would be required of him, and as the clock struck ten he rose.

"Well, I won`t keep you any more (/ну/ хорошо, я не буду = не смею вас больше задерживать). I daresay you`re tired by your journey (я думаю, вас утомило ваше путешествие)."

They shook hands (они обменялись рукопожатием; to shake hands— пожать друг другу руки; обменяться рукопожатием).

"Oh, I say, look here (о, послушайте-ка)," said Cooper (сказал Купер), "I wonder if you can find me a boy (могли бы вы найти мне боя). The boy I had before never turned up (бой, который раньше у меня был, так и не объявился; to turn up— поднимать вверх; находиться, объявляться) when I was starting from K. They shook hands.

"Oh, I say, look here," said Cooper, "I wonder if you can find me a boy. The boy I had before never turned up when I was starting from K. S. He took my kit on board and all that, and then disappeared. I didn`t know he wasn`t there till we were out of the river."

"I`ll ask my head-boy (я спрошу своего старшего боя). I have no doubt he can find you someone (я не сомневаюсь, он может найти = найдет/подыщет вам кого-нибудь)."

"All right (хорошо). Just tell him to send the boy along (просто скажите ему прислать боя ко мне; to send along— посылать /кого-либо, что-либо/ к кому-либо, куда-либо) and if I like the look of him I`ll take him (и если он мне понравится: «мне понравится его вид», я возьму его)."

There was a moon, so that no lantern was needed (была = светила луна, потому не было нужды в фонаре/не нужен был фонарь). Cooper walked across from the Fort to his bungalow (Купер перешел через форт = направился с форта к своему бунгало; to walk across — перейти).

"I wonder why on earth they`ve sent me a fellow like that (интересно, с какой стати /они/ мне прислали этого парня: «парня, как этот»; why one arth — с какой стати)?" reflected Mr. Warburton (размышлял мистер Уорбертон; to reflect — отражать; раздумывать, размышлять). "If that`s the kind of man they`re going to get out now I don`t think much of it (если они таких теперь собираются направлять на службу: «подготавливать», /то/ я об этом невысокого мнения; to get out — готовить)."

"I`ll ask my head-boy. I have no doubt he can find you someone."
