But it was too late (но было слишком поздно).

At that very moment the dinghy shot into the shadow of the fishing-boat (в тот самый момент ялик скользнул в тень от рыбацкого судна; to shoot – стрелять; пронестись, промчаться). There were two rapid pistol-shots, a scream (один за другим раздались два пистолетных выстрела, крик; rapid – быстрый, скорый), and then another pistol-shot, followed by silence (потом еще выстрел, и все затихло: «другой выстрел, за которым последовала тишина»). The clustering fishermen had disappeared («толпившиеся» рыбаки исчезли). And then, suddenly, as the first puffs of a land-breeze came out from the Sussex shore (и тут, внезапно, с первыми порывами бриза, дунувшего с побережья Суссекса; land-breeze – береговой бриз), the boom swung out, the mainsail filled (гик качнулся, главный парус наполнился /ветром/; boom – брус, бревно; гик; to swing), and the little craft crept out with her nose to the Atlantic (и маленькое суденышко, медленно двинулось, /направив/ нос в сторону Атлантики; to creep – ползать; ползти, медленно продвигаться).
