What I felt when I made that discovery I could not realize at the time (что я чувствовал, когда сделал такое открытие/находку, я не мог осознать в то время; to discover – открывать, обнаруживать), and I can’t describe now (не могу описать и теперь). I took one steady look at her with the knife in my hand (я неотрывно смотрел на нее, держа в руке нож; steady – устойчивый; неотрывный /о взгляде/). “You meant to kill me (ты собиралась меня убить; to mean)?” I said.

 I sprang upon her on the instant; but not quickly enough to stop her from hiding the knife. Without a word from me, without a cry from her, I pinioned her in a chair. With one hand I felt up her sleeve; and there, where the Dream Woman had hidden the knife, my wife had hidden it – the knife with the buckhorn handle, that looked like new.

What I felt when I made that discovery I could not realize at the time, and I can’t describe now. I took one steady look at her with the knife in my hand. “You meant to kill me?” I said.

“Yes,” she answered (да, – ответила она); “I meant to kill you (я собиралась тебя убить).” She crossed her arms over her bosom (она скрестила руки на груди; bosom – грудь; пазуха), and stared me coolly in the face (и спокойно/невозмутимо смотрела мне в лицо). “I shall do it yet,” she said. “With that knife (я еще сделаю это, – сказала она, – вот этим ножом).”

I don’t know what possessed me (не знаю, что со мной случилось: «что охватило меня») – I swear to you I am no coward (клянусь вам, я не трус); and yet I acted like a coward (однако я повел себя как трус; to act – действовать, поступать; вести себя). The horrors got hold of me (страхи завладели мной; to get hold of). I couldn’t look at her – I couldn’t speak to her (я не мог посмотреть на нее – не мог заговорить с ней). I left her (with the knife in my hand), and went out into the night (я оставил ее – держа нож в руке, – и вышел в ночь).

There was a bleak wind abroad (на улице/снаружи дул холодный ветер; bleak – открытый ветру; холодный, суровый /о погоде/; abroad – широко, повсюду; вне дома, вне своего жилища; за границей), and the smell of rain was in the air (и запах дождя ощущался в воздухе). The church clocks chimed the quarter (церковные часы пробили четверть) as I walked beyond the last house in the town (когда я миновал последний дом в городе; beyond – вне, за пределами; вдали). I asked the first policeman I met what hour that was, of which the quarter past had just struck (я спросил первого полицейского, которого встретил, после какого часа только что пробило четверть).
