My rest was disturbed (мой сон был нарушен; rest – отдых, покой). I awoke twice, without any sensation of uneasiness (я дважды просыпался без всякого чувства тревоги; to awake; uneasy – неловкий, скованный; беспокойный, тревожный: to feel/be uneasy – беспокоиться, тревожиться). The third time, that horrid shivering of the night at the lonely inn (на третий раз та страшная дрожь /возникшая/ ночью в уединенной гостинице; to shiver – дрожать, трястись), that awful sinking pain at the heart, came back again (и ужасная острая боль в сердце снова вернулись; to sink – тонуть; опускаться; вонзать /зубы/; вонзаться /о зубах/), and roused me in an instant (и разбудили меня в одно мгновение). My eyes turned to the left-hand side of the bed (мой взор обратился на левую сторону кровати). And there stood, looking at me (а там стояла, глядя на меня…) —

The Dream Woman again (снова женщина из сна)? No! My wife (нет! моя жена). The living woman, with the face of the Dream (живая женщина с лицом из сна) – in the attitude of the Dream (в позе из сна; attitude – позиция, отношение; поза, осанка) – the fair arm up (прекрасная рука поднята); the knife clasped in the delicate white hand (нож сжат изящной белой кистью).

 I lay down on the seventh night, still suspicious of something happening; still in my clothes; still with the door locked, the key on the table, and the candle burning.

The Dream Woman again? No! My wife. The living woman, with the face of the Dream – in the attitude of the Dream – the fair arm up; the knife clasped in the delicate white hand.

I sprang upon her on the instant (я тотчас же бросился на нее; to spring – скакать, прыгать; бросаться); but not quickly enough to stop her from hiding the knife (но недостаточно быстро, чтобы помешать ей спрятать нож; to hide). Without a word from me, without a cry from her (я не произнес ни единого слова, а она не закричала; cry – крик, вопль), I pinioned her in a chair (/пока/ я крепко привязывал ее к стулу; to pinion – подрезать или связывать крылья; связывать /руки/; крепко привязывать /к чему-л./; chair – стул; кресло). With one hand I felt up her sleeve (одной рукой я ощупал ее рукав; to feel – трогать, осязать; икать ощупью; ощущать); and there, where the Dream Woman had hidden the knife (и там же, где женщина из сна спрятала нож), my wife had hidden it (спрятала его и моя жена) – the knife with the buckhorn handle, that looked like new (нож с рукояткой из оленьего рога, который выглядел как новый).
