Between the foot of the bed and the closet door (между нижней частью кровати и дверью стенного шкафа; foot – нога, ступня; основание, нижняя часть), I saw a person in my room (я увидел в комнате человека). The person was a woman, standing looking at me (это была женщина, которая стояла и смотрела на меня), with a knife in her hand (с ножом в руке). It does no credit to my courage to confess it (признаюсь, /хотя/ это не делает чести моей храбрости; credit – доверие, вера; хорошая репутация; честь, заслуга; to confess – признавать/ся/) – but the truth is the truth (но правда есть правда). I was struck speechless with terror (я онемел от ужаса; to strike – ударять; поражать; speechless – немой; безмолвный; онемевший; speech – речь). There I lay with my eyes on the woman (я лежал, не сводя глаз с женщины; to lie); there the woman stood (with the knife in her hand) with her eyes on me (женщина стояла – с ножом в руке, – не сводя глаз с меня).

She said not a word as we stared each other in the face (она не сказала ни слова, пока мы вглядывались в лица друг друга; to stare – пристально смотреть, уставиться); but she moved after a little (но вскоре: «после небольшого /времени/» она /стала/ двигаться) – moved slowly toward the left-hand side of the bed (медленно подходить к левой стороне кровати).
