 My eyes fixed on her arm and her hand – she gave me time to look at them as she slowly drew the knife out of the bed. A white, well-shaped arm, with a pretty down lying lightly over the fair skin. A delicate lady’s hand, with a pink flush round the finger nails.

She drew the knife out, and passed back again slowly to the foot of the bed; she stopped there for a moment looking at me; then she came on without saying a word; without any change in the stony stillness of her face; without any noise following her footfall – came on to the side of the bed where I now lay.

Getting near me, she lifted the knife again (приблизившись ко мне, она опять подняла нож), and I drew myself away to the left side (а я передвинулся: «перетащил себя» на левую сторону). She struck, as before right into the mattress (она ударила, как и раньше, прямо в матрас), with a swift downward action of her arm (быстрым, направленным вниз движением руки; swift – быстрый, стремительный; action – действие, поступок); and she missed me, as before (и не попала в меня, как и прежде; to miss – промахнуться, не попасть в цель); by a hair’s breadth (/промахнулась/ на волосок). This time my eyes wandered from her to the knife (на этот раз я перевел взгляд с нее на нож; to wander – бродить, скитаться; блуждать /о мыслях, взгляде/; отклоняться, уходить в сторону). It was like the large clasp knives (он был похож на большие складные ножи; like – подобный, похожий; clasp – пряжка, застежка) which laboring men use to cut their bread and bacon with (которые рабочие: «работающие люди» используют, чтобы резать хлеб и бекон). Her delicate little fingers did not hide more than two thirds of the handle (ее изящные маленькие пальчики не обхватывали больше, чем две трети рукоятки; to hide – прятать, скрывать; закрывать); I noticed that it was made of buckhorn (я заметил, что она была сделана из оленьего рога; buckhorn – олений рог /материал/; buck – самец оленя, антилопы, зайца и т. д.; horn – рог), clean and shining as the blade was (была гладкой и блестящей, как лезвие; clean – чистый; гладкий, ровный; shining – блестящий; сияющий; to shine – светить/ся/; блестеть, сиять), and looking like new (и выглядела как новая).
