Gerhardt was not to be disturbed in his purpose.	Но Герхардта было нелегко сбить с толку.
He explained that he and his wife would bring her.	Он объяснил, что девочку принесут крестить он и его жена.
The minister, realizing the probable difficulty, did not question him further.	Священник, догадываясь, в чем затруднительность положения, не стал больше расспрашивать.
"The church cannot refuse to baptize her so long as you, as grandparent, are willing to stand sponsor for her," he said.	- Церковь не может отказать в крещении, поскольку вы, как дед, изъявляете желание стать крестным отцом ребенка, - сказал он.
Gerhardt came away, hurt by the shadow of disgrace in which he felt himself involved, but satisfied that he had done his duty.	Г ерхардт ушел, болезненно ощущая, что тень позора пала и на него, но в то же время ему приятно было сознание исполненного долга.
Now he would take the child and have it baptized, and when that was over his present responsibility would cease.	Теперь он отнесет девочку в церковь, ее окрестят, и тогда с него снимется всякая ответственность.
When it came to the hour of the baptism, however, he found that another influence was working to guide him into greater interest and responsibility.	Но, когда настал час крещения, оказалось, что какая-то новая сила вызывает в нем еще больший интерес к ребенку и чувство еще большей ответственности.
The stern religion with which he was enraptured, its insistence upon a higher law, was there, and he heard again the precepts which had helped to bind him to his own children. Gerhardt answered "Yes," and Mrs. Gerhardt added her affirmative.	"Да", - и миссис Герхардт также ответила утвердительно.

A thought flashed through Gerhardt's mind as the words were uttered of how it had fared with his own children.	Герхардт слушал, и вдруг в мозгу его молнией блеснула мысль о том, что произошло с его детьми.
They, too, had been thus sponsored.	Их тоже вот так крестили.
They too, had heard his solemn pledge to care for their spiritual welfare. He was silent.	Они тоже слышали его торжественное обещание заботиться об их праведности... Он молчал.
"We do," prompted the minister.	- Да, обязуемся, - подсказал священник.
