Я поднялась на перрон как раз в тот момент, когда отходила электричка на Брайтон. Раздумывать было некогда. Все кончено. Еду домой. Я прижалась лицом к стеклу и смотрела на места, которые прошла пешком. На сиденье позади меня мрачный круглолицый мужчина разговаривал по мобильному телефону: «Я пришлю тебе телефон Парки по СМС. Да, я знаю Лоуренса, он учился в Итоне». За окном холмы Даунс исчезли, заслоненные стеной набухших грозовых туч. Одна из них росла прямо у меня на глазах, перевоплощаясь в подпорные стены, нависшие глыбы и светло-голубые глубокие рвы. Казалось, что мир за холмами пережил мощный взрыв, что его разбомбили вдребезги. Но разве не так же мы движемся, между ничем и ничем, по жизненной полосе, где клонится на ветру амброзия? «Точно полоска асфальта над бездной» — однажды сказала Вирджиния Вулф. И если она права, то наш единственный дом находится здесь. На этой грешной земле. Мы пересекли реку и порвали с прошлым, а в пустынных полях по-прежнему разливается жаворонок, поет ей хвалебную оду.
