And he gave me a sad smile.	Он печально улыбнулся.
I waited a long time.	Я долго ждал.
I could see that he was reviving little by little.	Он словно бы приходил в себя.
"Dear little man," I said to him, "you are afraid..."	- Ты напугался, малыш...
He was afraid, there was no doubt about that.	Ну ещё бы не напугаться!
But he laughed lightly.	Но он тихонько засмеялся:
"I shall be much more afraid this evening..."	- Сегодня вечером мне будет куда страшнее...
Once again I felt myself frozen by the sense of something irreparable.	И опять меня оледенило предчувствие непоправимой беды.
And I knew that I could not bear the thought of never hearing that laughter any more.	Неужели, неужели я никогда больше не услышу, как он смеётся?
For me, it was like a spring of fresh water in the desert.	Этот смех для меня - точно родник в пустыне.
"Little man," I said, "I want to hear you laugh again."	- Малыш, я хочу ещё послушать, как ты смеёшься...
But he said to me:	Но он сказал:
"Tonight, it will be a year...	- Сегодня ночью исполнится год.
My star, then, can be found right above the place where I came to the Earth, a year ago..."	Моя звезда станет как раз над тем местом, где я упал год назад...
"Little man," I said, "tell me that it is only a bad dream - this affair of the snake, and the meeting-place, and the star..."	- Послушай, малыш, ведь все это - и змея, и свиданье со звездой - просто дурной сон, правда?
But he did not answer my plea.	Но он не ответил.
He said to me, instead: "The thing that is important is the thing that is not seen..."	- Самое главное - то, чего глазами не увидишь... -сказал он.
"Yes, I know..."	- Да, конечно...
"It is just as it is with the flower.	- Это как с цветком.
If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night.	Если любишь цветок, что растет где-то на далекой звезде, хорошо ночью глядеть в небо.
All the stars are a-bloom with flowers..."	Все звезды расцветают.
"Yes, I know..."	- Да, конечно...
"It is just as it is with the water.	- Это как с водой.

Where I live everything is so small that I cannot show you where my star is to be found.	Моя звезда очень маленькая, я не могу её тебе показать.
