Маленький принц

Even as I was digging into my pocked to get out my revolver I made a running step back. But, at the noise I made, the snake let himself flow easily across the sand like the dying spray of a fountain, and, in no apparent hurry, disappeared, with a light metallic sound, among the stones.	Нащупывая в кармане револьвер, я бегом бросился к ней, но при звуке шагов змейка тихо заструилась по песку, словно умирающий ручеек, и с еле слышным металлическим звоном неторопливо скрылась меж камней.
I reached the wall just in time to catch my little man in my arms; his face was white as snow.	Я подбежал к стене как раз вовремя и подхватил моего Маленького принца.
"What does this mean?"	Он был белее снега.
I demanded. "Why are you talking with snakes?"	- Что это тебе вздумалось, малыш! - воскликнул я.- Чего ради ты заводишь разговоры со змеями?
I had loosened the golden muffler that he always wore.	Я развязал его неизменный золотой шарф.
I had moistened his temples, and had given him some water to drink.	Смочил ему виски и заставил выпить воды.
And now I did not dare ask him any more questions.	Но не смел больше ни о чем спрашивать.
He looked at me very gravely, and put his arms around my neck.	Он серьезно посмотрел на меня и обвил мою шею руками.
I felt his heart beating like the heart of a dying bird, shot with someone's rifle...	Я услышал, как бьется его сердце, словно у подстреленной птицы.
"I am glad that you have found what was the matter with your engine," he said.	Он сказал: - Я рад, что ты нашёл, в чем там была беда с твоей машиной.
"Now you can go back home - "	Теперь ты можешь вернуться домой...
"How do you know about that?"	- Откуда ты знаешь?!
I was just coming to tell him that my work had been successful, beyond anything that I had dared to hope.	Я как раз собирался сказать ему, что, вопреки всем ожиданиям, мне удалось исправить самолет!
He made no answer to my question, but he added:	Он не ответил, он только сказал:

Then, sadly -	Потом прибавил печально:
"It is much farther... It is much more difficult..."	- Это гораздо дальше... и гораздо труднее...
I realized clearly that something extraordinary was happening.	Все было как-то странно.
I was holding him close in my arms as if he were a little child; and yet it seemed to me that he was rushing headlong toward an abyss from which I could do nothing to restrain him...	Я крепко обнимал его, точно малого ребенка, и, однако, мне казалось, будто он ускользает, его затягивает бездна, и я не в силах его удержать...
His look was very serious, like some one lost far away.	Он задумчиво смотрел куда-то вдаль.
"I have your sheep.	- У меня останется твой барашек.
And I have the sheep's box.	И ящик для барашка.
And I have the muzzle..."	И намордник...
