Beside the well there was the ruin of an old stone wall.	Неподалеку от колодца сохранились развалины древней каменной стены.
When I came back from my work, the next evening, I saw from some distance away my little price sitting on top of a wall, with his feet dangling.	На другой вечер, покончив с работой, я вернулся туда и ещё издали увидел, что Маленький принц сидит на краю стены, свесив ноги.
And I heard him say:	И услышал его голос.
"Then you don't remember.	- Разве ты не помнишь? - говорил он.
This is not the exact spot."	- Это было совсем не здесь.
Another voice must have answered him, for he replied to it:	Наверно, кто-то ему отвечал, потому что он возразил:
"Yes, yes! It is the right day, but this is not the place."	- Ну да, это было ровно год назад, день в день, но только в другом месте...
I continued my walk toward the wall.	Я зашагал быстрее.
At no time did I see or hear anyone.	Но нигде у стены я больше никого не видел и не слышал.
The little prince, however, replied once again:	А между тем Маленький принц снова ответил кому-то:
" - Exactly.	- Ну конечно.
You will see where my track begins, in the sand.	Ты найдешь мои следы на песке.
You have nothing to do but wait for me there.	И тогда жди.
I shall be there tonight."	Сегодня ночью я туда приду.
I was only twenty meters from the wall, and I still saw nothing.	До стены оставалось двадцать метров, а я все ещё ничего не видел.
After a silence the little prince spoke again:	После недолгого молчания Маленький принц спросил:
"You have good poison?	- А у тебя хороший яд?
You are sure that it will not make me suffer too long?"	Ты не заставишь меня долго мучиться?
I stopped in my tracks, my heart torn asunder; but still I did not understand.	Я остановился, и сердце мое сжалось, но я все ещё не понимал.
"Now go away," said the little prince.	- Теперь уходи, - сказал Маленький принц.
"I want to get down from the wall."	- Я хочу спрыгнуть вниз.

I dropped my eyes, then, to the foot of the wall - and I leaped into the air.	Тогда я опустил глаза да так и подскочил!
There before me, facing the little prince, was one of those yellow snakes that take just thirty seconds to bring your life to an end.	У подножья стены, подняв голову к Маленькому принцу, свернулась желтая змейка, из тех, чей укус убивает в полминуты.
