Маленький принц

I raised the bucket to his lips.	Я поднес ведро к его губам.
He drank, his eyes closed.	Он пил, закрыв глаза.
It was as sweet as some special festival treat.	Это было как самый прекрасный пир.
This water was indeed a different thing from ordinary nourishment.	Вода эта была не простая.
Its sweetness was born of the walk under the stars, the song of the pulley, the effort of my arms.	Она родилась из долгого пути под звездами, из скрипа ворота, из усилий моих рук.
It was good for the heart, like a present.	Она была как подарок сердцу.
When I was a little boy, the lights of the Christmas tree, the music of the Midnight Mass, the tenderness of smiling faces, used to make up, so, the radiance of the gifts I received.	Когда я был маленький, так светились для меня рождественские подарки: сияньем свеч на елке, пением органа в час полночной мессы, ласковыми улыбками.
"The men where you live," said the little prince, "raise five thousand roses in the same garden - and they do not find in it what they are looking for."	- На твоей планете, - сказал Маленький принц, -люди выращивают в одном саду пять тысяч роз... и не находят того, что ищут...
"They do not find it," I replied.	- Не находят, - согласился я.
"And yet what they are looking for could be found in one single rose, or in a little water."	- А ведь то, чего они ищут, можно найти в одной-единственной розе, в глотке воды...
"Yes, that is true," I said.	- Да, конечно, - согласился я.
And the little prince added:	И Маленький принц сказал:
"But the eyes are blind.	- Но глаза слепы.
One must look with the heart..."	Искать надо сердцем.
I had drunk the water.	Я выпил воды.
I breathed easily.	Дышалось легко.
At sunrise the sand is the color of honey.	На рассвете песок становится золотой, как мед.
And that honey color was making me happy, too.	И от этого тоже я был счастлив.
What brought me, then, this sense of grief?	С чего бы мне грустить?..
"You must keep your promise," said the little prince, softly, as he sat down beside me once more.	- Ты должен сдержать слово, - мягко сказал Маленький принц, снова садясь рядом со мною.
"What promise?"	- Какое слово?
"You know - a muzzle for my sheep...	- Помнишь, ты обещал... намордник для моего барашка...
I am responsible for this flower..."	Я ведь в ответе за тот цветок.
I took my rough drafts of drawings out of my pocket.	Я достал из кармана свои рисунки.
The little prince looked them over, and laughed as he said:	Маленький принц поглядел на них и засмеялся:
"Your baobabs - they look a little like cabbages."	- Баобабы у тебя похожи на капусту...
"Oh!" I had been so proud of my baobabs!	А я-то гордился своими баобабами!
"Your fox - his ears look a little like horns; and they are too long."	- А у лисицы твоей уши... точно рога! И какие длинные!
