Маленький принц

He did not follow my reasoning, and he answered me:	Он не понял, какая тут связь. Он возразил:
"It is a good thing to have had a friend, even if one is about to die.	- Хорошо, если у тебя когда-то был друг, пусть даже надо умереть.
I, for instance, am very glad to have had a fox as a friend..."	Вот я очень рад, что дружил с Лисом...
"He has no way of guessing the danger," I said to myself.	"Он не понимает, как велика опасность.
"He has never been either hungry or thirsty.	Он никогда не испытывал ни голода, ни жажды.
A little sunshine is all he needs..."	Ему довольно солнечного луча..."
But he looked at me steadily, and replied to my thought:	Я не сказал этого вслух, только подумал.
"I am thirsty, too.	Но Маленький принц посмотрел на меня и промолвил:
Let us look for a well..."	- Мне тоже хочется пить...
I made a gesture of weariness.	Пойдем поищем колодец...
It is absurd to look for a well, at random, in the immensity of the desert.	Я устало развел руками: что толку наугад искать колодцы в бескрайней пустыне?
But nevertheless we started walking.	Но все-таки мы пустились в путь.
When we had trudged along for several hours, in silence, the darkness fell, and the stars began to come out.	Долгие часы мы шли молча. Наконец стемнело и в небе стали загораться звезды.
Thirst had made me a little feverish, and I looked at them as if I were in a dream.	От жажды меня немного лихорадило, и я видел их будто во сне.
The little prince's last words came reeling back into my memory: "Then you are thirsty, too?" I demanded.	Мне все вспоминались слова Маленького принца, и я спросил: - Значит, и ты тоже знаешь, что такое жажда?
But he did not reply to my question.	Но он не ответил.
He merely said to me:	Он сказал просто:
"Water may also be good for the heart..."	- Вода бывает нужна и сердцу...
I did not understand this answer, but I said nothing.	Я не понял, но промолчал.
I knew very well that it was impossible to cross-examine him.	Я знал, что не следует его расспрашивать.
He was tired.	Он устал.
He sat down.	Опустился на песок.
I sat down beside him.	Я сел рядом.
And, after a little silence, he spoke again:	Помолчали. Потом он сказал:
"The stars are beautiful, because of a flower that cannot be seen."	- Звезды очень красивые, потому что где-то там есть цветок, хоть его и не видно...
I replied, "Yes, that is so." And, without saying anything more, I looked across the ridges of sand that were stretched out before us in the moonlight.	- Да, конечно, - сказал я только, глядя на волнистый песок, освещенный луною.
