Маленький принц

I felt the need of protecting him, as if he himself were a flame that might be extinguished by a little puff of wind...	Светильники надо беречь: порыв ветра может их погасить...
And, as I walked on so, I found the well, at daybreak.	Так я шел... и на рассвете дошел до колодца.

"Men," said the little prince, "set out on their way in express trains, but they do not know what they are looking for.	- Люди забираются в скорые поезда, но они уже сами не понимают, чего ищут, - сказал Маленький принц.
Then they rush about, and get excited, and turn round and round..."	- Поэтому они не знают покоя и бросаются то в одну сторону, то в другую...
And he added:	- Потом прибавил:
"It is not worth the trouble..."	- И все напрасно...
The well that we had come to was not like the wells of the Sahara.	Колодец, к которому мы пришли, был не такой, как все колодцы в Сахаре.
The wells of the Sahara are mere holes dug in the sand.	Обычно здесь колодец - просто яма в песке.
This one was like a well in a village.	А это был самый настоящий деревенский колодец.
But there was no village here, and I thought I must be dreaming...	Но деревни тут нигде не было, и я подумал, что это сон.
"It is strange," I said to the little prince. "Everything is ready for use: the pulley, the bucket, the rope..."	- Как странно, - сказал я Маленькому принцу, -тут все приготовлено: и ворот, и ведро, и веревка...
He laughed, touched the rope, and set the pulley to working.	Он засмеялся, тронул веревку, стал раскручивать ворот.
And the pulley moaned, like an old weathervane which the wind has long since forgotten.	И ворот заскрипел, точно старый флюгер, долго ржавевший в безветрии.

"Do you hear?" said the little prince.	- Слышишь? - сказал Маленький принц.
"We have wakened the well, and it is singing..."	- Мы разбудили колодец, и он запел...
I did not want him to tire himself with the rope.	Я боялся, что он устанет.
"Leave it to me," I said. "It is too heavy for you."	- Я сам зачерпну воды, - сказал я, - тебе это не под силу.
I hoisted the bucket slowly to the edge of the well and set it there - happy, tired as I was, over my achievement.	Медленно вытащил я полное ведро и надежно поставил его на каменный край колодца.
The song of the pulley was still in my ears, and I could see the sunlight shimmer in the still trembling water.	В ушах у меня еще отдавалось пенье скрипучего ворота, вода в ведре еще дрожала, и в ней играли солнечные зайчики.
"I am thirsty for this water," said the little prince.	- Мне хочется глотнуть этой воды, - промолвил Маленький принц.
"Give me some of it to drink..."	- Дай мне напиться...
And I understood what he had been looking for.	И я понял, что он искал!
